While in Stratford we went with friends. This restaurant is unassuming & very charming. The service was good & food unique & delicious. I would definitely go again!
A very interesting establishment, great selection of craft beers. The food was amazing, Pork Dumplings, Chicken Skewers, Beef Rice Bowl, Salmon Burger and the Carrot/Radish Salad are all a must try. The service is friendly and fast. We will be returning to try more of the food & drink fair.
Amazing. Awesome beer choices, knowledgable staff, great menu-tons of options- great for tapas style with friends (the bun was really tasty), fresh food, great atmosphere. A must try for sure in Stratford. Well done
My husband and I each ordered the Eggs Florentine. The description sounded pretty basic, but since I’d seen so many pictures on line of dishes with nice touches like plate drizzles and interesting garnishes, it might still be a good choice, maybe they were just understating it. The 25-minute wait, when we were one of two tables in the restaurant, made me wonder just how much work these plates required. However, when they arrived, they were disappointing. It was the Florentine, and half a plate of deep-fried potato cubes. I suppose it’s not fair to complain-it was exactly as described. I just thought it would have been a little bit (sorry for the MasterChef reference) elevated. But that’s okay. What wasn’t okay, was that the poached eggs were cooked hard. I mean solid. And the potatoes were so salty, we couldn’t eat them. We waited 5 minutes for the server to come back and check, and she didn’t seem to understand our complaint, but took the plates away. They came in much less than 25 minutes this time, thankfully. And the eggs were quite runny, but while you might think that sounds like an improvement, it wasn’t. The eggs were cold, and the whites were runny, too. I know from experience that hotels and restaurants will pre-poach eggs and let them rest in cold water and finish poaching them as ordered for quick service. The eggs were so cold, I can only guess that they took them out of the cold water and put them directly on the dish. We didn’t complain, because we figured if they couldn’t get the eggs right in the first two attempts, there was little reason to ask for a third. One other issue, the bacon was so salty it overpowered the rest of the flavours. I took it off and ate it separately (because it was very good bacon) and then found the other flavours I was looking for.On the positive side, the sauce on the Florentine was very nice. Buttery but somehow light. Our bill was discounted without having to ask, which isn’t always the case if a restaurant replaces a meal. I thought that, at least, showed good customer service.
Our return to Mercer Hall was somewhat disappointing. Compared to a year ago things have gone down hill. The service and atmosphere was friendly and inviting. The staff was excellent but the food and drink was very disappointing. The non alcoholic drink menu used to be vast but has now drastically reduced; no more fresh juices, mocktails or handmade sodas. The pricing is outrageous and the food uninspired and not as described on the menu as ingredients were missing or substituted. The menu itself has been changed drastically and you now have to order sides separately. We had the Greenest Salad and Fried Calamari to start. The hemp vinaigrette on the salad was a bland mayo type substance. Tasteless radishes and some other flavorless unknown root vegetable replaced the beets and the mint seemed out of place. The calamari with it’s drizzling of salsa verde and fermented carrot hot sauce were insipid despite what you would expect from the description and there were no shallots. The Pan Roasted Salmon was missing mint, the spring bean ragout drab, bacon broth lacking any flavor and the presentation with it’s strip of bacon was lacking. The 8 oz prime rib was stringy, lacking any smoky flavor as was described, and decorated with charred broccoli florets and some type of charred greenery that didn’t resemble green garlic. The horseradish jus was flavorless. The only flavor to speak of was the roasted red pepper puree. The side we chose was boiled potato with a whey butter and garlic (can’t quite remember the description) $8 for plain red skinned potatoes with a bit of chopped greenery. Not worth $8 in any way whatsoever! The rhubarb pie and mint chocolate ice cream sandwich was was welcomed after the let down of the first 2 courses though I have to say that $10 a piece for dessert was stretching it after that. The total bill with 2 dark ale draft beers for my husband and a bottle of plain San Pellagrino for me the bill came out to $151.42 without tip. I tipped only because of the service was good but with the bill having increased $70 with tip compared to ladt year, I doubt we’ll go back.
Great food – great service – great atmosphere! Don’t be afraid to order something as humble as a burger… I won’t be dramatic here but – the best burger I’ve ever had! We will be back!
Great service and apps. Not thrilled by the room ambience for a restaurant this pricey, but the excellent waiter made us welcome. Terrific cocktail menu and the apps were solid. The poutine with house made pastrami is a mist try. The bison was excellent, marred by excessive salt and a tepid gravy. The special German stew was a disappoint, ent, blame and uninspired. In general mains were disappointing, but to their credit, they took care of my entree as I didn’t care for it.
