Being from Montreal, a Montreal bagel is my reference point when it comes to what constitutes a proper bagel. It must be handmade, brined and baked in a wood stove. Also the kitchen must be open for all to see. Ottawa does not have a large selection of options when it comes to proper Montreal style bagels. Kettlemans is pretty much the only option with one exception in the Byward Market. Coffee shops and grocery stored for ex do not sell real bagels as per my criteria above. Because it’s a bit of a walking distance to the nearest Kettlemans I order via UberEats, which is a great option to have. St Viateur and Fairmount bagels in Montreal are the best imo but for Ottawa I would say that Kettlemans is a good substitute. I’ve never tried that other option I mentionned in the Byward Market. I typically order a lox bagel. I find that the amount of smoked salmon is a little bit on the lesser side compared to the lox bagels found at Beauty’s Dinette in Montreal for ex. Through delivery, they don’t offer capers. They go the olive route. For Ottawa, the lox bagel at Kettlemans will do. It’s not great but it’s decent. I find their take home cream cheese a little on the pricey side but it’s tasty. Overall I am pretty satisfied with kettlemans and the bagels themselves are delish. Being from Montreal, I know what a good bagel is! I give it a 4 stars. It’s a great place. And the Glebe location is open 24hrs so for ubering, it’s awesome.
There was a lot of hype about this place so I decided to try it out one day. I wasnt feeling to extravagant so I just got a garlic and butter bagel and man I was impressed. It tasted so good, I can just imagine all the others types would be at the same caliber. I think it is really cool how it is an open kitchen, its really cool to be able to watch them make the bagels and god there are so many. I like the set up of the place too, with the eating area seperate from the whole buzz. Would highly recommend people to try out this place
