I’ve always found it hard to walk down Chinatown and pick a restaurant, most of them have their windows covered or are located on separate floors, or just look sketchy. Origination, however, is quite inviting with its bay windows full of light and modern/clean dining room. So in we went hoping the food would be decent. We ordered the cucumber salad, the sliced beef shank for apps and two soup noodle bowls. Apps were good though both were served with the same peanut sauce. Noodle Bowls come with a side plate with all the ingredients to be dumped in the bowl, i assume to show the freshness of the ingredients… Soup was hot and broth was flavorful (did not think it was too salty as another reviewer mentioned). Noodles and toppings were also great. Will most likely be back this winter to satisfy my noodle soup cravings!
yummy traditional yunnan spicy rice noodles! perfect hot food in cold windy evening! the fried wanton is also good eat with spicy sauce. the price is also fair enough
As main course, we ordered the original noodles and the savory hot noodles. The rice noodles have a nice texture and are accompanied with a variety of delicate toppings for the mixed. The soup is soothing to drink on it’s own but the flavour is a bit too light to go with noodles, which may mean that there’s little MSG. The savory hot soup has a heavier taste but the spiciness covered up the broth flavour as expected. As sides, we ordered the marinated pork hock and jasmine pu’er tea. There was nothing special about the pork hock but I do like the way they served the tea. An assortment of delicate utensils were used to prepare the tea, closely ressembling the tradition way of serving tea. The tea itself, although, was just okay. Overall, I felt comfortable after eating there and would go back again if I feel like some soothing home food.
Origination offers a fresh take on noodles. Not only do they specialize in Yunnan noodles but for some of their dishes, they will carefully lay out the ingredients on the table in a beautiful sushi-esque way and pour them into your pot-bowl to cook. Afterwards, they leave a cart full of extra toppings/seasonings for you to add to the food if you so wish. From the moment I walked in, I could tell they had put a lot of thought into their restaurant design. The space is bright, open, and modern with Chinese design elements that are tastefully incorporated. In general, the atmosphere is inviting and peaceful… I think they even have pillows at the benches. I like the concept of Origination overall… Unfortunately, the food was just way too salty…
Went here with my girlfriend for dinner, the atmosphere is good and the food was great. We wished there was more to choose from but this is definitely a place I’d keep coming back to.
Excellent Lunch/Dinner place in Chinatown, Toronto. Lots of Young people and foodies like to spend time here to enjoy original taste of the food.
Overall: Delicious food (especially the broth used for Origination Yunnan Rice Noodle), Generous portions, Cute decorI tried their Origination Yunnan Rice Noodle and their Beef Stew Rice Noodle. Their Beef Stew Rice Noodle was almost a little too rich in flavour; it got too salty after a short while (I had a hard time finishing even half of it). The Origination Yunnan Rice Noodle was amazing though- the broth was so flavourful with the scent of Asian mushrooms and chicken. I wouldn’t say it’s the most authentic Yunnan rice noodles (the original Crossing the Bridge Noodle is more greasy with chicken fat), but it was definitely very delicious and appetizing. $12 for rice noodle may sound pricey, but it is totally worth it, considering the amount of noodle they give you. The service can be a little patchy, as many of the servers are still trying to learn how to get around, but it was good overall. I love the decor of this place- the patterned table cloth and the cleanliness of the place give it a polished look. I came here at 12pm sharp having no trouble finding seats, but after half an hour or so, there was a line up. I’m glad I got to try this place out- will be coming back! 🙂
