Capers is one of the few actual restaurants in the Campbellford area. There are many tables for guests, including an outside patio and a second floor inside for larger parties (or so it appeared). It boasts a tired decor within what appears to be a half-renovated Century home. My husband and I were eager to try this out since it is relatively close to home and it appeared to be a little more upscale. We were promptly greeted by our server and seated. Unfortunately, the table was sticky. Actually, everything was sticky. When I went upstairs to where the bathrooms were located (which obviously prohibits wheelchair access) the floor was incredibly sticky. We were essentially ignored for the rest of our time there. It wasnt busy, perhaps three other tables were occupied. We were disappointed with that.I ordered the escargot appetizer and it was the best part of the meal. It hinted of garlic and was totally covered with cheese. The toasted bread that came with it was great for sopping up the oil from the escargot. For our main meal, I ordered the special – seafood linguine with a side Caesar salad. My husband ordered a rib eye steak, with caramelized mushrooms and onions. Both of us tried the Caesar salad and we found that there was a bitter note to the dressing. We were happy that it seemed made from scratch but there was something off about the taste. There was real bacon on the salad, although most likely from a packet. We didnt finish the salad. My husbands steak was cooked fine but the quality of the steak was abysmal. Thin, full of gristle and tasting of nothing, it was completely over-priced. Generally, when you think of something being caramelized, you think it would be cooked over a long period of time, browned with a few crispy bits and full of flavour. This was not the case with the caramelized onions and mushrooms. They had briefly visited the pan, but were also disappointing. There were seasonal vegetables and a twice-baked potato. My husband thought the best part of his entire meal was the potato, since he could actually taste potato. For a $33 plate, he expected the best part to be the main protein but this wasnt the case at all. I regretted my choice as soon as my plate arrived. On top of the pasta, there were four mussels, adequately cooked but one completely broken. I mean, there was no way that happened in the pan, so the chef knowingly cooked a broken mussel and served it. Aside from those four seafood morsels, there was little else that screamed of whole seafood. No shrimp. No clams. There was some shredded crab meat in the sauce, which was so fishy and gluggy I couldnt get through a quarter of it. I have had the good fortune of living in Japan for a year in my younger days. There is very little in the culinary world I would classify as fishy anymore. This sauce, however, fit the bill and was pretty inedible. The toasted bread that accompanied the main meal was the same bread that had come with the escargot but this time, it was burned. I guess there is only so much consistency you can achieve with professional toasters these days. Our server couldnt really be bothered with us till she gave us the bill and even that was calculated incorrectly. She wasnt rude or mean, she was just apathetic. On a positive note, our pigs got the leftovers. They loved it.
Fantastic food presentation, service is excellent, chef/owner comes out to see if you are enjoying your meal, very relaxing environment. Great place to dine any time of the year!
I’ve dined there many times and almost always got great value for my dollar. It’s certainly the best dining in this town. The staff are great. Meals tend to be your standard trendy fare. The Prime Rib has always been excellent for me. The garlic mashed potatoes are garlicky for sure!. And the Caesar salad dressing is not for the faint of heart…I love it.They have a large outdoor patio right on the main road in town. The TGIF crowd in the summer is great. Apparently in the New Year (2016), the owner is going to open in the evening as a bar/pub. A classic building for that use.
