As mentioned by numerous others in this review section, the facility’s sanitary standards are extremely poor (through no fault of the staff, who are routinely rebuked by the owner & his martinet sidekick manager in the diner for alleged slacking in their cleaning assignments), the parking lot is severely potholed (which causes damage to tractors & personal vehicles alike), and the station itself lacks even basic amenities for truck drivers (such as a lounge, or showers that actually work). Some of this can be ascribed to the age of the building – now over 40 years old – but plainly the issue is with the owner, whose sole interest is lining his own pockets while unerringly ignoring customer & employee complaints about the service, pay, scheduling, and the state of the property itself. There is no management to speak of; rather, the ‘manager’ limits her involvement with the travel centre to waiting tables in the restaurant (in order to stuff her own pockets with endless tips while doing little to no actual work relevant to the gas bar, such as handling customers, balancing cash registers, cleaning work of any type, or waste-removal outside) and is only seen when converting change into cash at the point of sale machines or to tell someone off, usually without justification, for things that are outside their control. In the same vein and following her example, the owner shows up late in the morning or early afternoon (sometimes not at all), counts the previous day’s profits for a few hours, plays video games on his phone (doing nothing can get boring, naturally), and then essentially leaves until the next day – leaving the onerous tasks of reordering supplies and other administrative jobs to the kitchen and long-term gas bar personnel. No suggestions or recommendations are heeded, and employees are treated in a bestial manner (including reduced hours, wrongful terminations, unjustified reprimands for insufficient cleaning work, drive-offs, etc.). The vehicle used to transport the waste drums in the truck stop’s yard has a near-dead battery and no heater core, shutting down multiple times per use; the request to replace it with something more functional was met with a peel of sarcastic laughter. The toilets, sinks, and showers routinely clog and flood the property, leaving it to the ill-paid gas bar clerks to mop and clean the mess. Compared to corporate-run Husky stores, this is truly the dirtiest and most mismanaged truck stop in the country, bar none. Even the gas pumps frequently break down, causing frustrations for truck drivers and staff alike.Next time you fuel up, dine or purchase something here, remember that the money you spend is going directly into the pockets of two greedy and unscrupulous individuals with no regard for their people, the customers, or their place of business. It’s little surprise that the business is a revolving door with extremely high turnover and consistently poor reviews from clients as well as the company’s own internal auditors.
