2018/12/05This was my last opportunity to visit the Maguire neighbourhood, at least for a while, and I decided to try Le Rameau dOlivier, a mediterranean restaurant with Algerian roots. The restaurant seats about 50 in three dining rooms, and was mostly empty when I arrived shortly after 6 pm. After perusing the menu for a few minutes, the server brought a chalkboard and propped it up on a nearby chair, and explained the Table dhte. Among the half dozen main course choices was the Moussaka, which caught my eye, since I love eggplant. The Table dhte choices came with one of five appetizers, one of three desserts, and a hot coffee or tea. For my appetizer, I chose La Kmia cheese, which included samples of five of their cold appetizers. There were five round scoops of tzatziki, roasted red peppers, roasted eggplant, hummus, shredded carrots with cumin, with a few olives and a gherkin in the middle. What a nice way to try a variety of flavours. The Moussaka in the main dish was topped by a very smooth, creamy bchamel. I would have preferred that eggplant to be cooked a bit more; it didn’t cut neatly. The ground beef base layer was nicely seasoned. On the side was rice pilaf, a bit undercooked, and a salad, with a light, creamy mustard vinaigrette. For dessert I chose the Creme Brule. Nice, thin caramalized layer on top, with a sweet, smooth cream base. Along with loose leaf tea, a good way to finish a good meal. Service was polite and helpful, given my limited French skills.
