2018/12/04Evening #3 in the Maguire neighbourhood, this time at Saveurs de lInde, an Indian restaurant. I arrived shortly after 6 pm, and the restaurant was mostly empty. The restaurant seats about 60, and it was almost half full when I left around 7:30. The decor is fairly basic, with light grey walls, black chairs, black tables and tablecloths, topped with manilla paper. There a few photo murals on the walls, such as the one of the Taj Mahal. I didnt spend much time looking at the rest of the menu (in French) after I found a Butter Chicken dish under the Table dhote menu item called Le Banquet. For $26.99 it came with a few appetizers, some sides, and dessert. First out was a large, crispy disk of Pappadum, with a small portion of diced, spiced carrots. The next plate had three different appetizers on it. There were two Onion Bhaji (fritter), nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. There was one piece of Sheek Kebab, which was a cylindar of ground, mildly spiced meat. Not sure what kind of meat, but possibly lamb? There was a pleasant yellow dipping sauce for the bhaji and kebab. Also on the plate was a small portion of lettuce salad, with a light yoghurt dressing. Then came the main course of Butter Chicken, with Basmati Rice and sauteed vegetables, primarily cabbage. The menu showed it as Vegetable Bhaji, but my understanding is that bhaji is essentially a fritter, and the cabbage dish was not. The Butter Chicken sauce had more butter and was sweeter than another similar dish that I have had, and I liked it. I made sure that I sopped up every last drop, using the basmati rice. The portions were fairly large for one person. Lastly was dessert, which was a small bowl of diced fruit in a coconut milk sauce. Sweet, but not too much. Service was good, although overall it seemed to take a bit longer than it should, taking about 90 minutes from beginning to end.
