The Capitol was so close to being on our list of regular brunch spots until the food arrived…. My wife and I decided to try the Capitol on Sunday morning. My first impression was really positive. The room is tastefully decorated and clean. What really struck me was the background music. They were playing an eclectic mix of b-side oldies at the perfect volume. It was just loud enough to hear but not interfere with conversation. They clearly have a high end sound system. We started with drinks. I chose the bourbon Bloody Mary which was excellent. My wife had a mimosa. Again, it was quite nice. At this point in the experience, I was really impressed and very optimistic. For breakfast I chose the chicken and waffles while my wife had a brisket and Swiss cheese omelette. Neither choice were particularly good. The omelette was over cooked. It was lacking brisket in the filling and burnt in spots. My dish was the opposite. The waffle was underdone. The outside was not crispy and inside it was a bit gluey. The chicken was not close to golden brown and borderline under cooked. I inspected each piece carefully before eating it to make sure I didn’t get sick. I am torn as to whether or not I will try this restaurant again. Even though the drinks and room are great….. bad food is unacceptable.
This place is definitely worth going to. The look and atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent (very classy), and the food is terrific. I had the sandwich with crab on it, and wow was it ever good. The only think I disliked about it was the alcoholic drinks. I ordered what I thought was a sangria cocktail, and it had way too much sherry in it to the point of it being un-drinkable. Later on, when talking with a friend who had also gone there before, he said he felt the exact same way about the drinks. Overall, though, worth going to and I give it a thumbs up.
I absolutely loved the atmosphere at the Capitol. Gorgeous decor and smooth jazz playing in the background. Everything blended together seamlessly. The service was very attentive… we were never waiting long to have a plate taken away or a drink refilled. I found the drink prices fairly steep. It would be very easy to spend a lot of money on drinks alone. It definitely would not be my first choice if I wanted to go out for drinks with friends. Our food arrived in a well-timed manner (we ordered several tapas at a time), so our table wasn’t overwhelmed with too many dishes at once. Two out of the three dishes I ordered were delicious. I loved the caprese salad, although I found the ratio of mozzarella to basil and tomato a bit off. Next, I had the beef tagine. I can’t give this dish enough praise. It was intensely flavourful and had just enough spicy heat. Next came the duck crepes. This is where I was disappointed. The dish was served cold, including the duck. I suppose this may be due to the sushi roll type presentation. The description did not give any indication that this would be the case. The dish overall was lacking in flavour, it would have seriously benefited from some seasoning. Overall, I will definitely be back. However, due solely to the hefty prices, it won’t be any time soon.
