La Vega Chica has so many cheap food options packed into such a small space that it’s hard to decide where to eat. We decided to sit down at Chikita, a Peruvian/Chilean restaurant. It was a little difficult to order as there wasn’t a set menu, the waitress just named off a few dishes that they were offering. We had seen someone eating a chicharrón de cerdo and decided to order it. The waitress oddly was discouraging us from our choice, suggesting the lomo de vacuno instead. Should have been a red flag. But we ordered the chicharrón anyway, which came with rice, potatoes, and cheese sauce, and also paid 500 pesos extra for a cazuela de vacuno. The cazuela was delicious and really warmed me up, had some noodles mixed in and a big chunk of meat and corn. The chicharrón was however a disappointment. It was completely overcooked, dry to the extreme, and was lacking flavor. I’m really glad I asked for the cheese sauce on the side because it did not look particulary appetizing. Overall a disappointing dining experience, probably won’t be back.
