In the Ottoman Empire, Nteli (in Turkish deli) and later ntelil (in Turkish delil, ie 'drivers') were military cavalrymen organized in the Balkans at the end of the 15th century. The name comes from the Turkish word deli denoting the insane or foolhardy, the one who makes unheard of death defying bravery in fights or scuffles. The "delides" were originally followers of Beyler bey of Rumeli. They carried armor, lance, mace and outfits made of skins of wild animals.
