Sangai is a Manipuri hotel located in the busiest area of Guwahati city (Paltan area), the place looks cleaner and more spacious than most of the Manipuri hotels in the area. But there’s a question mark on the hygiene. The taste is no doubt savoury and delicious. I like their idea of showing the different type of food (meat and fish) presented to you in a big tray cooked in different styles and you can choose from there. The amount and the taste doesn’t disappoint you. I doubt on their hygiene because the last time I went there they gave the food to us in traditional banana leaves placed in a plate and I doubt they have cleaned those leaves properly because we found some small insects hovering around in the plate and dishes. Another minus point is the language barrier. I think many of the waiters don’t understand Hindi/English/Assamese. (I like their traditional attire uniform though).

I was a 1st time visitor to this place and must say the food they serve was tempting. I ordered Manipuri thali, one fish platter and. a mutton platter. Though the dishes were bit spicy but overall it was a good place to have ethnic cuisine. One speciality is they don’t offer any menu rather they show all the non veg items and you have to select from those. Good environment and very clean. Staffs are very cooperating.

This place is near Paltan Bazaar. It is the restaurant of Hotel Siroy Lily. This place serves Manipuri dishes at pocket friendly prices. They have an unique way of presenting their fare in a huge thali. There are three platters- chicken, pork and fish. One has to choose from the fare according to choices. We had the dry chilli pork. It was tangy, deep fried, yummy and very tasty. Nice experience.

This is the first Manipuri (Meitei) restaurant I’ve ever been to, apart from the small eat-outs. I went with a friend. The accessibility of the place is really striking. This is not a very big restaurant, however the space division is quite some work.As soon as I took my table, they served me water. The interesting and impressive thing about this place is they didn’t give me a menu, instead they showcased their menu on plates. We could taste the menu (variety of fishes, chicken dishes and other non-veg food items) and we could select any of them. We selected a traditional fish curry (rohu), another fish item (I don’t remember the name), prawn fry with mint leaves and fish part fry with potato.Once this process was done, they served me the traditional thali containing sticky rice, green chilly dipped in mustard paste, Manipuri style pakoda in a boat shape container made by banana leaf, Shingju (vegetable salad), Kheer (made by Red rice and milk), Dal, Ooti (a kind of dish prepared by peas with thick gravy), Iromba (a mashed potato with chilly and bamboo-shoot dish – I especially went for this particular dish) and Champhoot (Boiled vegetables – kind of soup). The food was served on a plate covered by banana leaf. In Manipuri cuisine, the dishes are either bland like boiled vegetables or hotter like iromba, chilly with mustard or sweet like kheer or the Ooti (little less sweet). The preparation of fish is much different than many other styles, with less spices.I’m a Manipuri so I know these food item. But the way they have preserved the homeliness of the dishes is really impressive. They don’t look commercialised as such. For a person not from Manipur, this will be a whole new experience. This breaks all the stereotypes of North-eastern food, how people have perceived the north-eastern food so far.Apart from this, the staff were friendly, nice environment, comfortable seating, reasonable price and lastly they don’t serve alcohol.Try this once for Iromba and Sticky rice.
