The Chalston Café is attached to the Charleston beach Resort. Which is why, most of the patrons of the restaurant are the guests of the hotel itself. In fact, if you happen to be a bunch of guys, walking on the beach, and want to have a beer at Chalston, chances are, you will be quietly but firmly discouraged by the management to walk in. I don’t blame them. If you want to be loud and boisterous, go somewhere else. Chalston is quieter, more genteel. It’s Blues and Sax. And Live music. Definitely no Bollywood or Punjabi Music thank god. And because the restaurant has a clear and direct access to the beach, a sunset from the restaurant chairs is breathtaking. Take a look at some of the pictures I took. Now add to that, a bottle of chilled Kings, and a plate of Calamari, and you’d weep with joy at a picture so perfect. The Food: Since, I have stayed at the resort twice, I have used the restaurant quite frequently and eaten almost everything they have to offer. The food is quite good although the Goan cuisine has been toned down a wee bit from its fiery self (perhaps to make it palatable for the Swedes, Danes and the Russians who abound there). Let me make a special mention of three dishes I loved. Beef Chilli Fry: It’s a personal favourite. Juicy chunks of meat along with ginger and sautéed onion rings. Chicken Lollipops: Chunky pieces of chicken given with a fiery red sauce. Unfortunately, they seem to have taken it off the menu. Calamari Chili Fry is fantastic too. All this, is served by very attentive and genuinely warm people. In fact, the owners Maria and Chalston can be seen at the restaurant quite often eating along with the guests. My only complaint? They shut shop too early. 10.30 pm. But like I said, it’s a café devoted to the hotel guests. And most foreigners like to eat their dinner early. Long Live Chalston.
