The Hotel Mandovi has been iconic to Panaji for more than 50 years. Their famed Restaurant Riorico once served as the Premier Place for the wealthy and the foodies. Off lately much hasn’t been heard of this restaurant in the news. But the food makes it a worthy place to visit. The Ambience has this old feel, like instant transportation to the 80s, but feels very dull compared to the top places today. Liveliness is missing, yet a calm feeling isn’t attained. Service is quite unique. Let me elaborate, waiters and stewards are very sussegado (relaxed) and the In-charge was yelling at them. They dropped cutlery on two occasions. The Waiter forgot to get us our Mushroom Rissois and then when we inquired at the time of main course, he said to let it be as now main course is here, which I find funny as a slight more courtesy is required. The drinks served were average but the food was delicious. Calamari Butter garlic was nice, but quantity was an issue. Stuffed Masala Crabs were fantastic they were more Goan Catholic Style, I would have preferred a touch less Red Masala. Chicken Cafreal was moist and flavours were beautiful but the gravy was very dry. The Best Dish was the Prawns Balchao. They were marvellous, a perfect combination of sweet and spicy with that slight hint of sourness, it was refreshing on the palate and goes great with Rice or Bread. I wasn’t very happy with the Veg Xacuti, It had a slight overdose of Star Anise or similar strong spice. We were surprised for dessert, They served a delicious Coffee Souffle.Overall we had a very pleasant evening at Riorico and we loved the food, but saying that I feel the hotel needs to go under a series of changes, bringing it at par with leading hotels and then I will be happy to say, the Mandovi will regain its glory.
