We all know the different types of biriyanis that are available. Just like we have everyday eats, I have frequencies on the types of biriyani that I eat, i.e.: Ambur Biriyani is an everyday biriyani as it is commonly available and affordable; Hyderabad Biriyani for me is for special occassions or once in a while biriyani; Awadhi Biriyani is exotic and rare to find even in a city like Bangalore and is expensive – A Connoisseur’s delight.Keeping in mind the affordability – I know it is just one week into the month, and most of the salary going towards rent and EMIs, I need to be conscious on my spend to sustain for the rest of the month 😉 and availability, I decided to have Ambur Biriyani. I had a few expectations set up since it was 1st time I was going to to this place. I ordered Egg Biriyani and was expecting the biriyani in typical Ambur Style – Ambur Biriyani is usually prepared using a short rice grain (sona masuri, Kolam rice, etc.); some restaurants use Jeera Samba Rice grain for extra flavor. Arrival of the BiriyaniMy biriyani arrived and I was pleasantly surprised to see the biriyani prepared using the long grain – Basmati, which is unusual for an Ambur Biriyani (Hyderabad and Awadhi biriyani uses the long grain). The accompaniments were the usually gravy and onion raita (nothing special). The flavors were coming through nicely with the typical aromatics of Ambur Biriyani. Smell of the food is as important as the taste of the food as this sets the mood of eating. Tasting of the BiriyaniAfter being surprised with the choice of grain and flavors coming through, it was time for me to put the food in its place – My mouth! The masala and spices in the biriyani was thoroughly soaked into the cooked rice and every mouth was flavorful. There was no overpowering of any spice or masala or dominating one over the other. Every spice/masala were complementing each other. However, I found the biriyani to be a bit on the saltier side, but when mixed with the onion raita, the saltiness reduced to an extent (the reason for the low rating of 3).The accompaniments (the gravy & the raw onion raita) were typcial of any Ambur Biriyani outlet (the affordable ones, I mean) though the gravy was thicker than many low-cost outlets and tasted much better.Portions served were more than enough for 1 adult (unless you are a glutton).VerdictWhat more can one ask for when this cost me just Rs. 70/- per plate! Going with a rating of 3 (less due to the saltiness of the dish ordered).Stomach filled and time to hit the road again.
