Janatha Cafe is a contemporary Kerala Chai shop. The graffiti on the walls evokes memories of Kerala tea stalls one was so used to frequent. They have a limited menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner however people flock there for their Kerala snacks like Pazham pori, unnakka, Neiyyappam, sukheen, banana bonda, cutlets and the list goes on. Most of these are priced at Rs 10 that makes it a great value for money outlet. All of the mentioned snacks can be washed down with a glass of strong tea that is made in front of customers and vertically beaten to get a frothy awesome brew. The very first sip of this can transport you nammude keralam. With amber lights, and tastefully done furniture this is a chai kada of the 21st century. Go ahead and have a kadi:)
Ordered Egg Roast and Appam from here. The appams were okay, nothing spectacular. The egg roast was very disappointing. It was cold and was lacking in salt and overall taste. I am not keen to give this place another shot.
Janatha Café is one of the small eateries that has come up near Hennur area. It is surprising to see many new eateries come up in this area. I feel the main reason for the same is due to increase in the number of offices & apartments coming up in this area. Janatha Café is one such place that serves South Indian and Kerala Style food. I recently ordered couple of items for breakfast. Let me share my experience.FoodThe items I took are some of the popular breakfast items in Kerala.Kadala Curry – The dish was well prepared, and it contained the required ingredients – black chickpeas, onion, ginger, curry leaves. Gravy was pretty good and was not very liquid, which I have seen many times. There was good amount of grated coconuts which enhanced the flavour. This is a curry that can be taken along with plain bread as well.Appam – This is the form of dosa that is the best combination along with the Kadala Curry. Surprisingly, it was not like the usual Appam that is thick from middle and thin outwards. It was thick from middle, but the outside also was relatively thicker. It was not crispy and was very soft. Ideally, Appam should be eaten straight after it is made on Tawa.Parippu Vada – The vada tasted decent and it contained the required ingredients like – Toor Daal, Red Chilli, Curry leaves, mixed in the Channa Dal Powder. The vada was little dark as it seem to have been fried in oil for a little long, would have ideally wanted it to be a little light brown. Chutney served are very liquid, would have wanted it to be a little thick.Banana Fritters – This sweet is very popular in Kerala. It contains the long piece of banana covered by flour, fried in oil. It is an item, that is not available in any of the South Indian eateries, expect the Kerala restaurants. I was happy to see that the Fritter did not have too much oil, as the oil seems to have been soaked well. If there was too much, the dish would have been heavy. I would advise people to taste the item with caution as not many would like it on the first go. Would recommend, taking one bite and then go ahead taking the full fritter.Overall ExperienceIt was a decent experience of having food from the restaurant serving Kerala style food. On an average all the dishes I ordered tasted good and I will order from here in future as well. If you are looking to taste for the first time, I would recommend, trying the items that I have mentioned above. My current rating is 3.5/5.Rating in other departments.Food – 3.5/5Service – 3.5/5Packaging – 3.5/5WFM – 3.5/5Food for 2 at this restaurant would come up to anywhere between INR 200-500. fodyssey.com
