Sana –Di – Ge is the multi cuisine restaurant located on the 8th Floor in the popular hotel, The Goldfinch. The last time I had visited Sana –Di – Ge was 6 years ago when the place looked different, the menu was not as elaborate and the service was satisfactory. One day, my friend told me that the restaurant had been renovated, and also the menu had been revamped. I just could not wait to try it out. As it was my husband’s birthday on 6th September, we decided to have a belated celebration on Sunday, 8th September at Sana –Di – Ge.Knowing it would be jam packed on Sunday, I decided to make a reservation. Around 12:00 PM, I called the restaurant and booked a table for 2 for 1:00 PM. We reached right in time in spite of the drastic rains. As we stepped out of the lift, the multi-tier Velakka was in the center of the lobby ready to welcome us. I made a note to myself to take a photo before leaving as the light from the Velakka adds more beauty to any photo. The pleasant smile of the staff member who was waiting to greet us with a Namaste made me feel very happy that the service has changed a lot since my last visit. As I entered the restaurant, I found it to be spacious and brighter as well. To the left hand side, I saw the Bar which was decorated with the various liquor bottles and other beverages. We had a choice of sitting either inside or out. Due to the unpredictable weather, we opted for a corner booth at the far end of the restaurant. This booth could seat at least 4 to 6 people comfortably.Once we sat down, the Menus – yes, don’t get me wrong – but there are 3 menus at Sana –Di – Ge. One is for Beverages, another for North Indian and finally the last one for South Indian food. This restaurant boasts about 4 Different kinds of Cuisine. They are: – Mangalorean/Kudla, Kerala, Goan and Maharashtrian. Since the list is endless, you might be confused on what to order! They also have North Indian and Chinese food in case that serves your palette better! While we went through the menu, I could see an array of Vegetarian Dishes. This is a key factor when I go out to eat as I am a pure vegetarian. In between scrolling through the menu, I was busy taking photos of the Unique Decor, Amazing View from the Window, Cutlery, Menu – You name it and I would have clicked it!Within a few minutes, a waitress by the name of Hema came over to take our order. Here is what we decided to drink and eat initially: -1. Kingfisher – My husband’s favorite beverage. It was cold and refreshing;2. Virgin Mojito (Mocktail) – Whenever I have to choose which Mocktail I would like to drink, 90% of the time it will be the Virgin Mojito. The Mocktail was served in a tall glass filled with ice and had the right mixture of mint leaves, lemon, sugar and salt. The taste was rejuvenating.3. Appetizer #1 – Vegetarian – Hara Bhara Kabab – One portion of this popular Appetizer came with 8 disc size Kababs which were served on a cute little Bullock Cart. The taste was mind-blowing! The Kababs had been made with mashed fresh peas and potatoes and stuffed with spinach and cheese. The ingredient which added more flavor to this Appetizer was the roasted garlic. The amount of breadcrumbs used to fry the Kababs was of sufficient quantity. You will not stop after eating one because they were so yummy! I ate this by missing each forkful in the Mint Chutney.4. Appetizer #2 – Non – Vegetarian – Chicken Pepper Fry (Kerala Style) – The second Appetizer was Chicken Pepper Fry (Kerala Style). Though I am a Vegetarian, the aromas which circulated in the air were quite tempting. The flavors were incorporated perfectly with the chicken which had been cut into medium size pieces. Had to pack this one home as it’s too much for one person. When it was time to order the Main Course, I had a difficult time as there were many options for Vegetarians. I did not want to eat the same Dal and Paneer, so after browsing for a few minutes and taking the help of the waitress, Ms. Hema, I settled for the following items for my Main Course:-1. Main Course – Vegetarian – Phalguni Subzi – This dish was made with fresh vegetables (Beans, Carrots, American Sweet Corn, Peas and Capsicum) cut into bite size pieces and tossed in cream and brown garlic. Hands down – This is one of the best Vegetarian Dishes I have tasted in Mangalore. The taste was amazing, and after thinking what could be the secret to this dish, I finally put a finger on it – The dish had been cooked in Olive Oil instead of Coconut or Refined. Thanks to the generous helping of cream in each mouthful, this dish will make you feel full soon, but fortunately, you can pack the leftovers, and that is exactly what I did. If there is a dish I would recommend, then this is the ONE. 2. Bread – Kerala Parantha – Usually used to eating Kulcha, Naan and Rumali Roti, so decided to try something different and ordered a plate of Kerala Parantha. This popular leavened bread hails from the Malabar Heartland. Drizzled in Ghee, the taste was rich and yummy. If you zoom in, you can see the various layers as that’s what makes the Paranthas different from other kinds of breads. Each piece will melt in your mouth. I happily tore a piece and whipped it up with a teaspoon of the Phalguni Subzi. The Kerala Parantha was so flavorful, that it could be eaten by itself too.3. Main Course – Non – Vegetarian – Kozhi Varutharachathu – This popular dish hails from the coast of Kerala. As the menu states, it is a Syrian Christian Specialty. The chicken has been simmered in a roast and ground spice mix with a wonderful tempering at the end with curry leaves. I could see the steam circulating in the air when this dish was brought to the table. My husband is a hardcore Non – Vegetarian and told me that it tasted delicious. The difference between this Chicken Curry and others is that it has grated and fried coconut which acts as the base.4. Bread – Appam – These are white pancakes prepared with fermented batter composed of rice and coconut milk. They are crispy on the sides and soft and super fluffy in the middle. Appams are made in a special Non Stick pan known as “Appam Chetty.” The Appams here were soft and tasted sweet too. I would recommend this with any of the South Indian side dishes and main course. The crowd started pouring in by 2:00 PM and by the time we finished our Main Course, all the tables had been occupied. Since our stomachs 90% full, we saved 10% for the Desserts!I never leave a restaurant without ordering Dessert. I read out all the items in the Dessert Menu to the birthday boy, and as soon as he heard the words, “Ragi Manni,” he chose to order this as he is very fond of this dessert. We decided to share it since we both wanted to taste it and knew if we ordered 2 plates, it would be too much!Dessert: – Ragi Manni – In English, it is translated as Finger Millet Pudding. When you look at it, you might wonder if its jelly or mousse as the appearance is somewhat similar. The glossy texture was so smooth that even a tiny piece of cherry could not balance itself in the center! It slid down to the side of the plate. We took a bite, and I must say, it was one of the best Ragi Manni we have ever eaten! As I a big sugar freak, I hardly eat desserts made with jaggery. However, this was an exception and I am definitely going to order this during my next visit. The leftovers had been packed and our stomachs were filled to the brim. We asked for the Bill which happened to be brought in a medium size wooden boat! This is something I am seeing for the first time. Our overall experience in Sana-Di-Ge was a very good one. Happy to add another restaurant to my list, as well as recommend to others. Do hope to visit in the future to try out more of the tantalizing dishes.
