Carnatic is the new place creating buzz with it’s authentic finger licking good South Indian food. Got a chance recently to visit the place and tried their Breakfast Menu.Started with this pulpy muskmelon juice called Panka, it is a must try here. Ghee Dosa and Akki Roti both were done really good and tasted fine as well. Paneer Ghee Roast with Neer Dosa was one of my favorites here, the flavors came out really well. Gutti Vankaya Pulav was the show – stealer for me. So many different flavors in this brinjal based Pulav was like a carnival in my mouth. Even my non vegetarian friends loved it more than Chicken Biryani. In Desserts, I loved the Coconut Mousse andCarnatic Kulfi. The mousse was very creamy with bang on flavor of Coconut, which I absolutely savored. The service was great and the pricing is pretty nominal for the quality of food that you get here. All in all, an excellent place to satiate your South Indian food cravings. Coming back soon for the Pulav definitely.
Appam was sweet, when asked Murugan the captain said this is how appam is made. Mutton was cooked well, but the gravy was watery and no flavour of coconut. Porotta was good, fluffy, roasted ..
Serves dishes from all over South India! We had Chicken Kurma from Tamil Nadu and Mappas Kozhi from Kerala. Both dishes were executed well. The former had big tasty chicken chunks in a creamy sauce. Mappas was in a thick coconut gravy. Had these with Parrota. Finished with the tasty Obbattu (or puran poli). Yummy!
Carnatic is a South indian cuisine restaurant in Church Street that offers some delicious authentic food. The minute you walk into the restaurant you get the feel of it with the lingering smell of camphor and the beautiful paintings to the music playing in the background. You must try their Veg thali that had a lot of my favourite food from Majjige huli, Karibevu anna, poori, Dosa and some hot rice and Poppu which is my absolute favourite. From the beginning, starting from the Panaka and buttermilk for the welcome drink to the Curd and pickle with some crisp Sandige, it was a delightful experience
Love the variety served to us on the thali, service was great and so was the food. The chilli chicken was honestly my favourite part of the thali. It was honestly priced very well, highly recommend visiting.
Food Blunder: Restaurant took order for Vegetarian Soup but served Non-vegetarian Soup The incident happened on 15th August 2019, but I did a lot of thinking before writing this post. The reason being, the restaurant manager requested multiple times not to write about it since they have just started with the business. However, I realized it would be wrong not to report such incident which highlights the complete lack of empathy, respect and responsibility towards the guests/customers. Here is what happened. We chose to try out the new Carnatic Restaurant on Church street for a late lunch. The menu (check the image) contained dishes from Karnataka, Andhra, Tamil Nadu etc. The first error that I noticed, the restaurant did not bother to highlight the vegetarian and non-vegetarian food with the green and red/brown dot, used universally to distinguish between the two. Since one of us is a pure vegetarian, we thought we will order Kundapur Style vegetarian soup (check the image) for both of us. When the soup arrived, it looked fine and my family member, who has been a vegetarian all his life, tasted it. As he continued drinking the soup, he however noticed something fibrous in the bottom of the soup bowl. When I started drinking the soup, I started stirring it as I always do, and it is then I noticed something fibrous. I tasted the whitish-fibrous substance and realized it’s chicken. I immediately instructed my vegetarian family member to stop consuming the soup and asked the nearby waiter to call the manager. This waiter said the manager is out for lunch and will take some time. In the meanwhile, he got the electronic device (tablet), which they use to take food orders and cross checked the nature of the soup. This waiter who was not the one who initially took the food order from us, found that the waiter who took the order from us has indeed taken it for a vegetarian soup. It means that the blunder of serving us the non-vegetarian soup has been committed by the chef. While we kept waiting for the manager, the waiter came and apologized. It took a while before the manager showed up and she immediately started apologizing. I told her that apologizing doesn’t alter the fact of making a vegetarian person consume chicken without his knowledge or consent. Since this vegetarian family member is young, he can probably get over it in sometime. However, I couldn’t have imagined the plight of my vegetarian uncle who doesn’t even consume garlic. What if he would have been made to taste chicken soup in such a situation? The cook was also called for and he apologized too, but the entire apology looked like a charade. Since we have also ordered some other dishes apart from the soup, such as Puliyogare for my vegetarian family member and Nalli Fry for me, we decided to eat it, pay the bill and leave. According to my vegetarian family member, the Puliyogare was average. Since I love mutton, I found the Nalli Fry had more curry leaves than mutton and besides, the mutton was not fresh at all. When we asked for the bill, the waiter insisted that it is on them and we need not pay at all. I insisted that I will not leave the place without paying the bill as I do not believe in free meals. So, we were given a bill which was discounted (the restaurant reduced the original prices of each food item). We paid and left never to return.
The place is welcoming and cozy.A small place but well organized. The service was good. But it is sometimes difficult to get attention of the people.Soup: we tried chicken coriander soup. And it was good!Starters: We tried ammas chicken and gongura chicken. Ammas chicken was good. Gongura is not as expected. And it is full of bones! And very much oily.Main course: We tried akki roti and ragi roti and it was just ok.Dessert: we tried coconut mouse. It is not as expected the hype seen in reviews. But this really disappointed us.Ambience: 3/5Service: 3/5Soup: 4/5Starters: 2/5Main course: 3/5Dessert: 2/5
