The setting looked pleasant and was close to home on a mid-week evening as we stepped out to celebrate a birthday. We chose this restaurant based on the reviews and called to reserve a table. In less than ten minutes, we knew we had made a bad choice but it was too late on a school night to leave for another place. Compared to the other restaurants in the hotel which we have enjoyed dining at, this was a total letdown.Firstly, the choices were painfully limited much to the disappointment of our Italian-food loving tween. The service person had to keep checking with the kitchen about the items we enquired about, but most of them weren’t available anyway. Then the service fully slowed down for no apparent reason – no one came to enquire about refilling drinks or even for another serving of water. The one steward who came more than half an hour into our visit looked like he wanted to just breezily check the box about enquiring after the food. Here is a gem from him on seeing the couple of pizzas on the table that my kids had ordered, as we waited for the other dishes to arrive – ‘just pizzas for you this evening?’ We wondered if we were subjected to service by trainees who were still learning to talk not just to restaurant patrons, but even people in general. We still wanted to salvage our evening, so tried to chat up the staff to find out if there was some problem that they were grappling with that evening. No luck at all there, other than some mumbles about some ‘menu change’ or something. Another steward came to our table and we had no choice to let him know that we had already given our feedback. The service people did their jobs of arranging the plates/serving food/clearing them politely, but there was no one taking any interest or ownership of the service to our table at all. The chef of the evening came towards the end to tell us that he had heard we had a problem with the food. We repeated ourselves, all over again to him – that the food served to us was good but we didn’t have any choice at all when we ordered. He apologized for the inconvenience, but that didn’t help the restaurant side of our celebratory dinner. It was a learning moment for our kids about how service at a so called good restaurant is not supposed to be like at all. We left without ordering dessert as we wanted to end the ordeal soon. Needless to say, the process of getting the check finally after the first one turned out to be a wrong one completed our Bene experience. Just wonder how many stars this restaurant service should receive!
