On my way back home from the Bandra train station, my throat was parched. I was looking for a place, any place, where I could get a chilled drink. And that’s when the Juice Box sign loomed over and I did not give it a second thought. The place, few steps above from street level, looks very colorful from the outside. The inside can best be described as spartan. There is a large menu board above the ordering counter. I look around; the place cannot be rated for ambiance. There is a tentativeness relative to the ordering. I was not sure who I could place an order with or who I might ask questions of. Finally, after a wait, I take a bold step and ask a person who was literally straddling the ordering counter. My luck, he was a waitperson. The menu was all over the place and I ended up ordering a Dry Fruit Falooda.I walked over to a brightly colored chair facing the street. Perched on a higher level, the street view was quite interesting – watching the hustle and bustle from atop was a lot better than being in it. Soon my Dry Fruit Falooda was served. The presentation of the Falooda was very good; it had bright colors. It was served in what looked like a beer mug with a paper straw and a plastic spoon. I took my first sip; it was like no Falooda I had ever tasted – and I have had quite a few. Perhaps it was because my straw was buried too deep and it touched the bottom from where I got a taste of that painfully sweet red syrup. So I stirred my Falooda hoping to balance out the flavors and the ingredients. The vermicelli was clumped, the sweet basil seeds were non-descript. The ice cream was chalky. Dried fruits? I could taste none; they could best be described as mixed candied fruit peel. All in all, a huge disappointment. The place was more like a self-serve kiosk, so service was not personalized. To be fair, the order taker was nice enough to help me navigate through the one-pager menu.Clearly, my experience was way below expectations. I wondered why. First off, my expectation of the place was without basis, I walked in with a parched throat and the ‘Juice Box’ sign was like a mirage. My stop was impulsive and my expectation, irrational. Then the price point; the price points here are unrealistically modest. It would be unreasonable to expect any kind of real dried fruit at that price. So, perhaps, this place caters to a specific market need. Falooda connoisseurs are sternly warned.
