KENZEN, meaing healthy food or related to good health (according to my friend who has a mastery in Japanese language), is a Japanese themed restaurant which srats true to its name.Located in the quaint streets of Bandra, this small place doesn’t fail to pack a huge, tasty and ofcourse, healthy punch. The minimal japanese styled ambiance with well lit interiors, crisp furniture and chopsticks laid on the table brings out a very pleasant, comfortable yet professional vibe. We stared our meal with sipping chilled LEMONADE and withing minutes we were served our appetizers.TORIKATSU – The first preparation itself was sushi rolls, the thing I wanted to try the most! I’ve had sushi a couple of times before, but never from an authentic japanese place such as this one. The presentation itself was beautifully delicate, as if the chef was an artist and the plate, his canvas. Fried chicken wrapped in japanese sticky rice formed a delicious sushi, and the fun of having it with chopsticks, dipping it in soy sauce, was really an experience worth having. The taste, I thought would be a little weired, of eating fried chicken with rice basically, but that absolutely wasn’t the case and I loved it through and through.TERIYAKI CHICKEN – This preparation was the one I am used to having, but I’d like to say, the Teriyaki Chicken served here beats them all! The meat is soft and tender, and the home made Teriyaki sauce is the show-stopper of this preparation. It truly was delicious, and definitely worth being in your bill! Also, the lovely presentation, especially the tangerine slice is the cherry on the cake!YASAI TEMPURA – Tempura means anyting fried, and Yasai Tempura is exactly that. Hand picked seasonal veggies fried to give you and amazing crunch, while the soy sauce add flavour to it. The veggies included slices of all 3 bell peppers, onions, zuchinni, brocolli and babycorn as well. Healthy? Maybe not. Tasty? Yes, a bit, if you like veggies. Japanese? Ohh yeah!!DONBURI BOWL – CHICKEN IN SOY-GARLIC SAUCE WITH EGG FRIED RICE – Well the name says it all, but let me share with you what it doesn’t. The delicious taste of the chicken with a thick sauce smeared all over the egg fried rice. Also, the rice used in this preparation (and also in the Sushi) is not the traditional Indian variety but specially imported from Japan, the famous Japanese sticky rice. Try this and fall in love with it!Now its time for the final course, the DESSERT!COTTON CHEESECAKE and MISO ICE-CREAM – A special preparation of Japanese styled fluffy cheesecake made using Philadphia cheese and on the side of it is a special inhouse preparation of Miso ice cream. The desserts as well are truly Japanese!I have a lovely experience in here at Kenzen and if its value for money, affordable and delectable Japanese cuisine you’re looking for then KENZEN is your answer!Happy Burping!!!
This place is located v close to bhaba hospital at hill road.Very easy to locate and a perfect choice for sushi lovers. In the heart of bandraThe menu offers great japanese and chinese cuisine. From soups, salads , appetising meals to desserts they serve a hearty meal ..My favourites -I absolutely loved the avocado sushi, vegetable tempura and the cotton cheese cake are an absolute must try..Love the presentation too and it’s a treat for eyes and your palette too.
Had a wonderful time at Kenzen, highly recommend you to try this place if you love Japanese cuisine. It’s a small place with cozy , well lit ambiance, courteus staff and pleasant vibe. The food was exceptional and fresh, highly recommend you to try their sushis, we tried their Californian roll and asparagus tempura sushi for starters. For mains we tried their prawn in yuzu butter egg which comes in a bowl and is like a whole delicious meal in itself, the flavors were great in this one, the prawns were cooked to perfection. The rice was flavored subtly. The portion sizes were pretty great too. For dessert you’ve got to try their cotton cheesecake with miso icecream! It was extremely soft and fluffy. Overall it was awesome ! The chef was nice and was willing to customize our order 🙂
Superb lunch at Kenzen this afternoon. To start with ordered the Salmon avocado cream cheese sushi. (4/5). This was followed by by their fire cracker shrimp. (5/5). Mains was Miso Salmon fried rice. (4/5). And the best way to end their meal was their dessert. The cotton cheesecake with misu ice cream. (5/5). Excellent service. The chef Tanuj is young energetic and very enthusiastic. Average ambience. Tried the new Zomato Gold and got a 15% discount. Overall a great experience.
Kenzen is located just before Bhabha Hospital off Linking Road Bandra West and it is easy to locate. The restaurant is decent in size and the ambiance is made by using bright lights and wooden chairs and tables hence it looks great. A wall has nice paintings done with Japanese and Chinese influence and it looks amazing. Tables and chairs are nicely arranged. The menu consist of Japanese and Chinese cuisines and the menu in nicely bifurcated with great options in soups, salads, sushi, appetizers, meal and ramen bowls plus some amazing desserts are also available. I loved the selection in every section as they have not added too many items and have explained each dish nicely. Prices are not too high and the quantity served is satisfactory.I went here for dinner and the service was decent. Special thanks to Chef Tanuj Bhambri who takes your order and recommends dishes according to your preference and he explains everything very nicely. What We Had -APPETIZERS~Edmame Gunkan -Edmame based sushi with tofu skin covering on outer section and rice filled tasted great. I loved the lightness of the flavours and this gad little sweetness too. The edmame was perfectly done and was not too hard.EBI Tempura Sushi -My favourite dish done in a decent way. This was prawns tempura sushi and I enjoyed eating this as the veggies had nice crunch and the prawns were fresh. Plus the tempura had nice crunch.Torikarsu, Togarashi -Panko crumb fried juicy chicken presented nicely tasted nice. I loved the tender texture as it was not overdone and the crunch was nice however the seven spicy mayo drizzle should be more as it will definitely enhance the taste of the dish.MAINS~Chicken in Soy Garlic Sauce with Egg Fried Rice Donburi Bowl -One of the filling and tasty meal bowl that I have tried. This had chicken in light soy garlic sauce along with egg fried rice, salad and micro greens. The sauce tasted brilliant as it didn’t had strong flavours of both soy and garlic. The rich was nicely done with fried egg and the chicken was tender and juicy. Also it was topped with the tempura crunch which adds nice touch to the bowl. I loved every element in the dish and it tasted perfect together.DESSERTS~Cotton Cheesecake, Miso Ice Cream -Sponge cake with salty miso ice cream and caramel sauce on the plate looked stunning and tasted brilliant. The cake was fluffy and was not too sweet, the caramel sauce adds little sweetness but the miso ice cream helps to tone it down. So the dessert is perfect as the ingredients help each other. So the meal at Kenzen was good as I loved some dishes and the ambiance is also nice and cozy. Therefore do visit them.
Getting back from work on a cyclone-induced rainy day in November, my appetite got the better of me. My route brought me via Hill Road onto Waterfield Road. I was in the mood for light Asian fare. That’s when I spotted Kenzen – what better than a Japanese supper (a bangohan)? The eatery is alongside a developing Eat Street on Waterfield Road. The entrance has an inviting natural blackstone-tiled, open patio and a set of equally inviting wood-framed glass doors. Inside, there are rustic wooden table and chair settings as well as chairs facing a butcher block type wall mounted counter. The place has an overarching contemporary look and feel. There is a subtle Asian feel, nonetheless, rendered by wall murals and artwork. A porthole at the far end, placed asymmetrically, serves as a mirror frame and lends dimension. There is good, aesthetic use of space and the place looks eminently clean. The ambiance is remarkable.Unlike most places these days, Kenzen does not try to be all things to all; there is a laser focus on the offerings – authentically Japanese. There is a good selection of soups, salads, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The menu is well laid out and that facilitates logical ordering. I ordered a tofu miso soup, salted edamame, and salmon sashimi (listed as Pink Citrus). The food was delivered in short order. The miso soup had the right texture and the right ingredients; it had little diced tofu, nori seaweed, and chopped scallions. What stole the show was the subtle yet unmistakable taste of the dashi – it clearly had the essence of the sea. I would be remiss if I did not highlight the silken texture of the diced tofu. If I were to be nitpicky, I would wish that it were served piping hot; perhaps it was and I let it sit. Outstanding soup, no doubt. The edamame was excellent. I had requested that the edamame be served with only a salt seasoning. The edamame was steamed just right and so was the salt sprinkle. In terms of serving, I wish the edamame were served in a steamer (bamboo or any other); it would have retained its temperature and moistness. Regardless, the edamame was fresh, had textural integrity and had a firmness to the bite. Loved it!Then there was the salmon sashimi (Pink Citrus). The plating was remarkable: it was colorful, the salmon arrangement was the focal point and the base, comprising the sweet lime and a citrusy, light dressing, was moist. The fresh salmon pieces were arranged in a flower form and it was served on a bed of sliced sweet lime and loose leaf lettuce. The usual condiments like the gari (shaved pickled ginger), wasabi in a leaf shape – both on the main plate – and a side of dark soy sauce, served in a ramekin crucible. The salmon conveyed a freshness that had to be tasted to be believed, the gari and wasabi complemented the beautiful pieces of salmon to create a flavorful explosion in my mouth. The occasional soy sauce dip was refreshing. The sweet lime and loose leaf lettuce were not idle bystanders; they also served as effective palate cleansers. Clearly, the (Pink Citrus) salmon sashimi was the hero dish. I had a palpable feeling of gastronomic satiation. Overall, food was top-shelf – two thumbs up.I had expected service to be the weak link, given that the place is new. Boy, was I in for a surprise! The waitstaff were attentive, courteous and knowledgeable. To boot, the owner-chef was in attendance; not just to make his presence felt. Au contraire, he was actively engaged. This ensured that the quality of service was superlative; this is quite different compared to some of the newer eateries. Without any hesitation, service gets a two thumbs up.My experience at Kenzen was memorable. It checked all the boxes be it ambiance, food or service. On my way out, the owner-chef tempted me with a cotton cheesecake. He described the dessert so vividly and temptingly that I almost gave in. Eventually, I gave in to the persistent, haloed angel perched on my shoulder and decided to defer my rendezvous with that sweet sensation. I will be back for more of the food and when I do, the dessert will definitely feature on my order list. But for the minor caveats, Kenzen mostly hit all the right notes. So, as Arnold would say, I’ll be back!
For the price and what’s on the menu, Kenzen is worth it. Plus 1 for hospitality. I personally am not a fan of thick noodles in ramen so maybe that’s something to consider. Also you won’t find chashu as they don’t serve pork.Pink citrus is so good !! Gunkan has interesting flavours too.
