Every now and then, I definitely get a craving to try some authentic Maharashtrian meal which sends me on a spree to hunt for new places nearby to explore.. The closer the better.. My roomie came raving about Gomantak yesterday and I took this opportunity to go new place hunting, so I could refer new places in case it turned out good.. First look at Gomantak is not too inviting, as it’s a pretty small place, which give bit of a crammed feeling.. But I have long learnt that decor of a place is not the best criteria for judging the flavors of a place.. So we went ahead with no prejudices regarding the food..We went ahead to order a chicken thali and a fried bombay duck fish thali.. I would have loved to try the vade mutton here, but sadly, they were all out of it.. These guys were pretty prompt in taking the order, but they took quite some time for preparing the fried fish.. Coz when we asked later, the chicken had been ready while the fish was cooking..They were a bit on their toes with the whole service, but I think they were bit understaffed even to handle a total of 12 customers at the same time.. And we went in on a relatively less busy day.. Pushing that aside, when the food did arrive, it took a great deal of restrain on my part to savor it rather than gorging it down.. The fried fish was definitely worth the wait..The spice, the marination, the crisp all of it had worked perfectly.. These guys were definitely not too stingy with the quantity of fried fish which I have seen lacking in many places.. On the other had, the curry provided with the thali was not that delicious, they had the spice palete set, but the extra zing that is associated with fish curry was definitely missing.. I found that to be the same case with the chicken curry my roomie ordered..The chapatis and rice were good.. Soft, warm chapatis and the right type of rice grain with fish curry is definitely an important choice.. While it might seem like a simple task, messing up with the main carb in an Indian meal is genuinely a criminal act.. More importantly, the chapatis and rice were a reason I could finish the curry which lacked some key components of flavor..All in all, I don’t regret the meal as the fried fish was delicious and definitely worth revisiting this place.. The prices here are super reasonable for the quantity and quality served and the service while not the best is definitely polite.. Hope these guys improve on the gravy soon.. Cheers!!!
Taste is classic but its costly.. however ambience is good and hygienic. Owner behaviour is quite irritating.. service quality is up to the mark.
This is only a feedback, and not a detailed review. we just came back from having our lunch at this small eatery located just about 50 mtrs ahead of Indori Foods. From Bremen chowk travel on the Spicer college road, and just after Maharashtra Restaurant, turn to the left, after crossing the bridge, go straight for about a km., and then you will see Indori foods to your right, and then this place, a few metres ahead.we tried their Bangda thali, the Surmai thali, and also ordered one plate of fried Bombil. They give 4 chapatis and little rice, while I would prefer to have more rice and half the no. of chapatis. The fish was fresh n flavorful, rava coated and fried, not too oily. The fish curry had that typical sour taste, wasnt too hot. Bombil was very fresh, lusciously delicate to handle! Solkadhi was average. A good meal, if you ignore the ambiance which isnt much. This is the place to visit if one wishes to have fresh and good quality seafood at moderate pricing!with 2 soft drinks added, it cost us Rs. 660/- but the fish was very good! I will visit again, there are quite a few varieties on the menu and more visits are needed to try them!
Loved the food here. We had been to pune from Mumbai and on our way back we couldnt hold our hunger and wanted some simple non spicy maharashtrian or malvani food. Thanks to zomato we followed the route and reached here. When we got to the place, we were skeptical looking at it, being a small khanaval type of place. We ordered a veg thali and a non veg thali. The taste was awesome. Loved prawns gravy. Even veg food was damn good. It was priced very reasonably. Dont mind visiting again.
