Dalchini, Paud Road – Onam Sadya #WanderDriveEatA Sadya meal, is something every foodie must experience once in their life, even if you’re an unabashed carnivore. Ideally it is something you experience on Onam in a Keralite’s home, with food cooked by their mother. I’ve been very lucky to have the privilege. If you want to have real and authentic Sadya, find a Keralite, coerce them into becoming your friend and then blackmail them into inviting you to their home on Onam. If not kidnap a Keralite aunty and make her cook for you, but I wouldn’t condone such criminal activities. Actually I would have, but Dalchini has started their own Sadya, it’s really good and I’ve heard crimes rate around Onam have gone down as a result.I will say straight away, the Sadya at Dalchini is amazing but not as amazing as I’ve had at my friend’s place. But it definitely gives you a great experience in terms of the feel and taste of what a Sadya should be. The star of the meal was for sure the amazing Sambhar and Rassam, absolutely flavourful and soul satisfying, had with the specially sourced brown rice. All the chutneys and pickles adding an amazing spicy, sour and appetizing element. The Avial (mild vegetable stew), Thoran (Beans and carrots in coconut and curry leaves) were great. Pachadi (beetroot raita), one of my favourite things in a Sadya, was amazing too.But all the flavours were a bit milder comapred to what I’ve had. Not in terms of spice, but just the intense, distinct flavour each different dish has. As each component is supposed to have its own properties and flavour, which makes this a complete meal (sweet, sour, bitter, spice etc). I’ll say again, in no way was this unimpressive, it definitely was really delicious. The Parippu Pradhamn, or the kheer, was just too sweet, so I couldn’t have more than a few bites. A little less sweetness and it would be perfect, it was cold, soothing and creamy. So overall, if you really want to try Sadya, but don’t have a Keralite friend or not really into committing crimes to get your fix, Dalchini is the perfect place to go. The place is amazing, the servers are very pro-active, everyone wearing Keralite attire and with the proper music, it’s a complete experience. Must try!
