Spice Box – 2A, Anna Salai, heritage town, Puducherry Food and Flavour: 3.5/5Ambience: 3/5Service: 3.5/5Seating: 2.5/5Value for Money: 3.5/5A doctor friend who spent a good few years studying at PIMS suggested this place. Apparently, Spice Box at Hot & Cold Bar & Restaurant was a ‘go-to’ place for resident docs at Pondy! Well, not just the doctors, of course! The Hot & Cold Bar and Restaurant setup has 4 options to choose from. A family restaurant, a pub, a cocktail bar and a rooftop garden for parties. We chose Spice Box which is a non-smoking family restaurant as we wanted to dine. The service wasn’t great with delays in order completion. Odd sort of chap who waited our table. Quite a bit of privacy on all tables with enclosures and dim lighting. There was a 2+1 offer on liquor. Order:- Prawn 65 (₹180 x2) – Fresh Prawns, great batter-prawn proportion, no oily after-taste, this was so good we ordered one more of it! Medium portion size.Chilli Egg (₹90 x2) – It was tender and spicy. Too much colour added, mediocre.Masala Peanuts (₹60) – Moist mixture of carrots, onion, cucumber, nuts and pappad. Don’t have this often, so I liked it. Chinese Fried Chicken (half – ₹160) – This one surprised me! The sweet and spicy flavour of the slurry gets to you soon but was lip-smacking good! Similar to teriyaki chicken. Well cooked together. Must try. Chilli Paneer (₹110) – Paneer was not fresh as you’d get that after-taste biting through the slices. Spicy, mediocre. Medium portion size.Mutton liver fry (₹200) – Not my type of dish but my friend recommend it for they make it really well. Given a nod by him. Paneer Tikka (₹130) – 6 slices of paneer with capsicum, onion and tomato all mildly charred. I loved the taste although the paneer could’ve cooked a tad bit longer.Served with onion slices, lime and a tangy pudina chutney. Kal Dosa with gravy (₹50 x2) – Good stuff. Chicken gravy and coconut chutney given along. Egg Dosa with gravy (₹65 x2) – A big, well made egg dosa. The coconut chutney given for both dosas was excellent! You’d be surprised; no pulp, nutty! The chicken gravy was served like-warm and would’ve tasted even better when hot! Mildly spicy and spice rich dish. Must try!Egg Masala (₹80) – Good pick for a dosa or Idiyappam side. Strong spice flavoured gravy. Unlike most places, the egg was cooked together. Curd Rice (₹80) – Not my pick outside home but I did not regret my friend ordering it. Ghee rich curd rice seasoned with mustard and curry leaves. Alcohol:-Budweiser beer – ₹460 for (2+1 promo)Imperial blue whisky – ₹160 (2+1 promo)Royal Challenge – ₹220 (2+1 promo)Budweiser Magnum – ₹230 Pepsi – ₹25 for a 300ml bottle Kingfisher Beer – ₹320 (2+1 promo)Desmondji blue – ₹260 (2+1 promo)It was a good overall experience at Spice Box. Offers are on, through the week. Food is good, relaxed and pocket friendly. The other options here get full easily but if you’re out for a meal with or without family you can step in. Ambience cannot be compared to a regular trendy restaurant but this is your staple at Puducherry. Seating isn’t very comfortable. Very limited parking available in the premises but spots available nearby. Womenfolk friendly. Two medium sized TVs setup for your viewing pleasure. Total bill:- ₹3286/- including 2% VAT & 6% service tax.
