After a long day of travel, we retired for the day at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Amritsar. Given our state of body and mind, we decided to stay put at the hotel. The Hotel has many options ranging from fine dining to a pub. We opted for the pub, Buzz, since we were decided on a light fare. The pub, Buzz, is situated one flight down from the foyer in what appeared to be the basement.First things first, the pub has a BOGOF offering for all drinks, except, wine, I think. We ordered our beverages and the service was attentive. We ordered some light appetizers as accompaniments for the drinks; all pretty good but none to crow about. For our mains, we decided to go the lite route and ordered the Insalata Greco. This, we thought, should translate, roughly, to a Greek Salad. So, we expected the regular green salad with crunchy greens, drizzled with olive oil and a smattering of feta cheese. Instead, we got what looked like a Betty Crocker-type Cheesy crepes with veggies and chicken. It was stuffed with veggies, black olives, chunks of chicken and served with coarsely ground black pepper and melted cheese. All in all, not a bad dish but certainly not a Greek Salad. We should have known better because the wait staff had us point our order in the menu and he pored over it for a while before retreating to the kitchen. What probably happened at the kitchen was that the wait staff gave his interpretation of the dish to the chef. Our order was ‘lost in translation’. After our surprise dinner, we were in for an audio treat rendered by a local band. The young man at the vocals was also the lead guitarist; he was ably supported by the band members at the drums, synthesizer and bass. Tunes in Hindi and Punjabi – all good. Now for the final verdict: Ambiance gets a thumbs up and so does the attitude of the wait staff. The disappointment was the order – Cheesy crepes in place of a Greek Salad is about as far of a culinary chasm as one can dream up. The silver lining was that what was served was eminently edible. Would certainly recommend Buzz as a fun pub; just be sure of what you order; that is, stay away from the continental food and you may avoid disappointment. Check out the Indian fare.
