Went expecting the classic Muniyandi military fare, but came back disappointed. The biriyani was the insipid, poor bhai type. The thalakari was immensely forgettable. The saving grace was the rasam in the end & a glimpse of the old hospitality in one staff member. If you want good rasam (!) with your vazhai ilai – banana leaf – meals and if you won’t mind a hole in the wall ambience, try this once. And move on.
This place is almost a regular hangout of mine, particularly for dinner as it does not bite the purse. My favorite is their Kotthu Barotta and Kal Dosa. The curry they give is pretty awesome. Don’t buy biriyani here though, it is definitely not their forte at all. The ‘master’ (Madurai’s hotel side cooks are called so) is mostly from Madurai and hence a customer knowledgeable in Madurai’s street food scene can order items that isn’t on the menu board. But whenever you eat request them to salt & spice it up, particularly the non veg side dishes.
