This restaurant is in the back alleys of busy Pondy bazaar.Parking will be a trouble.Restaurant is clean and service is quick. We ordered vegetarian meal, INR 130 and Thalasery Kozhi fry, INR 150.Meals was not at all Keralite. Sambar and rasam with vegetables tasted like Chennai meals only.I expected Kerala cuisine and was disappointed. Chicken fry was a typical 65 with coconut seasoning. Nothing extraordinary. We need to taste their other dishes to give a better verdict. Yet, what so ever we ate didn’t have the taste of Kerala.Today we had, Onam sadya for INR 300.23 dishes. I would rate 7/10 for authenticity and 7/10 for taste and 9/10 for value for money.
I was here yesterday with my folks. Just say mallu food and my parents are there already. We had the Tawa meen Biryani which was really good! Then we tried the parotta and Kandhari konjan curry. Now every malayali knows the punch kandhari gives you and this simply lacked that spice hit. We also tried the thoran, chammandhi and pulishery which were served with the meals. They were okay. The food lacks flavour was what we felt.Washed it all down with Nannari Sherbet which was heavenly in this heat.Must mention that they serve a killer lemon pickle with the food. Must try it!
Live Malabar food. Then this is a place to try. It’s pocket friendly and does serve some really good mallu cuisines(this being said from a malayalee)..The food :The Malabar biriyani – Wasn’t the best I have had in Chennai, but it wasn’t bad either. Loved the flavourThe Chatti fish curry – Loved this one. Good quantity and taste. It was the fish time trying such a dish, and I really enjoyed this oneThe Malabar Kozhi fry – Was a bit less on the quantity and the meet was kinda lessThe Nannari sharbath – It’s good, tastes very similar to the Nannari juice people make at homeAppam and porotta – really good. Worth the try !Puttu – It’s soft and tasty, but felt the quantity was a bit less.Tff : 4/5 thefoodfella.wordpress.com
So last week, I got to know about this new place in T Nagar called Grand Malabar Mess and more than me, this friend of mine who loves Mallu food wanted to check out the place. The place is at the road that’s parallel to Pondy Bazaar, somewhat behind the new McD (still can’t believe there’s a McD in the middle of Pondy Bazaar). The restaurant is attached to a hotel but thankfully, it’s very much on the ground floor and visible. They also, fortunately, have a valet parking service. Otherwise, by the time I found a place to park in T Nagar, I would be in Teynampet. The restaurant is pretty compact with just a handful of tables. Since it was a weeknight, we got a table easily. The menu too is small with limited dishes. The fact that they’re new reflected in the fact that some items from the menu were also not available. We opted for a portion of Koonthal Porichathu (Squid fry), Meen Manga Curry, Appam, Malabar Egg Parotta and a glass of Nanari Sherbet. The squid fry was really good. The masala marination was perfect and the freshness of the seafood was apparent from the chewiness. We wiped the plate clean in no time before moving to the mains. The appam was basic and the Egg Parotta was neat. The star of the evening was the Meen Manga Curry which is easily one of the best I’ve had in town. Instead of using raw mango chunks, they’ve gone for a fine julienne style of chopping. The curry excellent paired with the mains we ordered. The Nanari Sherbet too was strong and refreshing. The above-mentioned items cost me Rs 571. I honestly expected a little more than what the numbers in the bill said so I was pleasantly taken aback. Grand Malabar Mess is a lovely little joint that I strongly recommend for those wanting a quick fix for that mallu food craving.RATINGS BREAK UP:-Location:- 3/5Parking:- 5/5 (valet)Food:- 4/5Customer Service:- 3/5Ambience:- 3/5Price:- 5/5
