Abbai Tiffin center is one of the oldest in gandhi nagar serving some good South Indian breakfast. Located in gandhi nagar just opposite to more super market its more suitable for a take away than dining. I’ve been visiting them from my school days and very well aware of their food items. Must say the quantity and quality have decreased drastically. Its now just a regular breakfast joint for a dosas, idlis and wadas.
It used to be the only tiffin centre in that area but now many smaller centres which serve better fare have sprung up in gandhinagar. The food nowadays isnt on par with what it used to be few years ago. Their maintenence has also gone down pretty badly. Their chutney is pretty tasteless and sambar is okay at best.
My parents’ house is very close to Abbai so I’ve had many a breakfast from here over the past decade or so. In its earlier days, Abbai made some of the best dosas, sambar, idli and chutney that this area has seen. It became somewhat of a household name given the legendary masala dosa with the kaaram chuntney in the middle. It also used to be a very clean tiffin center, so much so that the kitchen used to literally shine somedays. They also have a small chai/coffee guy so you can top off your meal with a hearty cuppa. However, things have drastically changed over the years. More tiffin centers with tastier options have opened up. I’m not sure if it was the effect of time or Abbai being unable to keep up with the competition. I was mighty disappointed when I ordered an MD as we call it the other day. It wasn’t crispy, the kaaram didn’t have a bite to it, the sambar was cold and the chutney was grainy. I was absolutely shocked at how not a single element went right. The kitchen was rather grimy too. I couldn’t believe that Abbai could have fallen like that, so I shook my disbelief and ordered from here again yesterday. We got a plate of Mysore Bajji and Idli, assuming that these just can’t go wrong. Boy, was I mistaken! The bajji was doughy and soft on the outside. The idli had a strange texture to it..it didn’t really melt or fall apart in my mouth. It’s a shame that Abbai couldn’t keep up the good work. I would not recommend this place anymore, unless you were in a hurry or happened to be visiting the hospital that’s nearby.
