One of the few places that took me by surprise . This place opened up much later in joint , the service staff had highly recommended their food . We took a chance and ordered the recommended dishes . We ordered for one Chicken Ghee Roast with Malabar Paratha I don’t know if I got the name right . It was lip smacking in fact because of this one dish I kept frequenting the joint . It blends really well with a few drinks or just as it is . The quantity is apt for two people if you order extra bread . The dish is very flavoursome and has a great appeal to it . Must recommend to all aficionados of spicy food .
Big Bharat Canteen a new entry in the Joint food court located in Banjara Hills Road No.8 opposite to GVK Mall. This has become a very busy stretch of road considering it connects the Jubilee Hills road and also the Meridian school located nearby. Valet parking is available but the parking by the valet is done on the road itself. Once you get down and walk in the private corridor road and enter the Joint, you take a right at the entrance and go to the open area where the stalls are located. One straight forward disadvantage is that the open area seating does not allow kids as it is specifically for smoking. So if you are a family then you will be taken to the common seating area which is to the left side when you enter the joint entrance. It would have been nice if the Joint allowed even families to be able to enjoy the open seating and not just adults. So we went to the family area and seated down in a private room as we were quite a few in a number. One of the next immediate problems seen was the lack of proper air conditioner working in any of the inside areas. That day was very hot and the inside air conditioner was not working properly. After some time we started sweating down soon. The Joint seating is not maintaining the air conditioner or keeping the area cool during the summer times. The ambiance I should say the very dim lighting was making it very dull and also the seating was not so comfortable for eating of the table.Since we came just for Big Bharat Canteen, we only asked for the specific menu and started going through the items. It was interesting to see different items from different parts of the country put together in a 2 page menu. The menu is not specific to any cuisine and it’s a pan-India affair. So below are the items we had for our dinner.Bread-A Fare————Methi Mutter Malai Naanza: The best dish of the evening I had, absolutely delicious a mixture of Pizza Style with Tandoor. Basically Tandoori Naan topped with melted cheese mixed with methi mutter, spices, coriander topped with chili flakes and with some garnishing of onions and lime. This was one dish everyone had enjoyed the most and were even ready for a second round of it. The size and portion of it was equivalent to a 9-inch pizza. It is not too heavy and not too light on the stomach and with the tandoor naan base it had given a new flavor.Appam Vegetable Stew: Kerala’s one of the most famous vegetarian dish, 2 good size Appam’s served with the stew having coconut milk as the base mixed with curry leaves, carrots, cinnamon and spices. The stew was not too sweet and of the right taste. Appam’s eaten well when hot, the more you delay the more crispy/soft it becomes. I had particularly liked the taste of the vegetable stew. Chakna – The Stuff——————-Chatpata Masala Peanuts: If you are having some hard drinks from other outlets in the Joint, then this is your perfect dish to go with the hard drinks. Yummy spicy masala peanuts mixed with onions, tomatoes and good amount of spices topped with some lime. We had ordered 2 portions and they finished quickly even without drinks.Chhote-Chhote Bites——————-Palak Paneer Samosa: Crispy deep fried triangle shaped samosa’s stuffed with mostly cottage cheese/mozzarella cheese mix served with the mint chutney on the side. For people who have a sweet tooth along with some crispiness this is the right dish for you. It is mostly sweet and bland and a right dish for the kids who will love it.Bhindi Kurkuri: Crispy deep fried ladies finger which is made to be fully crunchy as you eat mixed with some coriander, red chilies and a good amount of spices on top. Again, this goes well with some hard drinks if you are having any. Not recommended for kids who cannot handle the spices. Paneer Bhurji Tartlets: The concept of trying out starters on Tarts has become something common now-a-days. A Tart is a baked dish with an open top usually filled with some pastries, but being used now more commonly for starter dishes. This one used diced dry paneer mixed with tomatoes, onions and spices on top. Kind of a mini Shakarkand Tikki: Basically sweet potato cutlets served with mint chutney on the side. Tender cutlets mixed with some peanuts and literally melted in the mouth. Not spicy but goes well with the mint chutneyMethi Makai Vada: Cutlet style mixed with methi and corn a little toasted on the top which gave a different flavor. Goes well with the mint chutneyThe Big Canteen Veg Thali: The Thali is a mini version of all the dishes above and gives you a chance to explore all the items above in a more smaller manner. Would recommend the thali for getting a taste of the BBC starters.Ek Aur Extra————-Pav 4-PC: I am specifically mentioning this one as the Pav’s were amazing with lightly toasted and coated with GHEE and Butter together created an amazing taste. I had ordered it for my kid and ended up eating just the plain ones without any sides.Overall, I should say the food was excellent, but since BBC is part of the Joint seating the ambiance might make you a little bit down. This is not something you can blame BBC but rather the overall Joint needs to manage much better. I would also love to probably to be allowed to seat in the open area along with families rather than restrict it to only smokers. The service was decent and nothing exemplary about it.Overall Rating (out of 5):————————–Food: 4/5Ambiance: 3.5/5Service: 3.8/5
