Baati Chokha – Gomti Nagar (Lucknow)I have been to this place twice and if one is looking for authenticity of the famous baati chokha in UP then this is the ideal place to visit and experience a big feast. While my first visit to this place was in the month of September 2019, I will write about my latest experience on 15 Jan, on Makar Sankranti. This place has a great ambience with oil lamps decorated at many places, the hukka at the entrance, jute rope wooden cots, food served on leaves in the most traditional style and for lassi and water, they use earthen pots ie kullads. We ordered the famous baati chokha and sweet lassi. It was an exotic eating experience as we don’t get to eat such amazing preparations in most parts of India (other than UP). The staff serving you food is also dressed in traditional attire and culture of Banaras is demonstrated to the true spirits of its heritage. We were served two baatis per person initially with chokha. One of my colleagues suggested daal also with the baatis. They serve hot desi ghee and recommend it to be poured onto the baati and daal. The food is delectable out here, undoubtedly and a must try for anyone who is visiting Lucknow for the first time. I was suggested churma also but the I was already down with 3 baatis with chokha and daal so, my appetite did not permit to check out churma,Being the traditional food, I have tried baati chokha in a village in Ballia as well and this delicacy is very common in a place like Lucknow. As street food, you can get a place of baati chokha for just 30 bucks with 2 baatis in the meal and simple chokha.
I just happened to order from bati chokha one fine day and I absolutely loved it. It is a restaurant on every count but the food takes it up a notch. It is extremely difficult to differentiate between ghar ki khichadi and bati chokha ka khichadi. The spice quantity consciousness is beyond satisfaction. The food is always cooked to perfection and the unadulterated ghee just knocks this out of the park. The sattu tastes like it has been made a couple of hours back( insanely fresh). The portions are value for money and full of flavour. The overtone of heeng(asofidieta) in the entire menu provides much contentment to the very critical tastebuds of mine. Its full on desi, it is full of flavour, it is full of amazing pure organic desi ghee and the courtesy of the staff is bewildering. For all the people who are traveling through Lucknow, people who are away from home and have found solace in Lucknow, this restaurant, will take you back to your homes. Give it a try, somebody is trying to offer something great. Kudos bati choka, keep up the great work!
