This humble eatery is literally a hidden gem, it’s hidden in the bylanes of Saltlake Sector-5, in the alley right opposite Technopolis building. I am unaware of any other pocket-friendly Assamese eatery here in Kolkata, so Jaluk surely is a gift to the Kolkatans. The place is of course run by an Assamese guy and the menu makes sure you keep coming back here for more! Recently I was there to try out some authentic Assamese food. The Pork dish that I had ordered to be savored with steamed rice was called Pork with Mustard Leaves (lai shakh). The Pork was slow-cooked with elephant apple and mustard leaves and had a thin mildly spicy flavorful gravy, perfect to go with steamed rice. There were five small pieces of pork out of which three pieces concentrated mostly on lean meat while the rest was fat. But definitely, the pork fat added more character and taste to that thin gravy which I will remember for a very long time. Try other pork Assamese dishes as well at this place like the Pork Dry Fry, Pork Mati Daal, etc. Besides this, I had also ordered for Leafy Green Vegetable fry (Saag) and their signature fish delicacy called Mashar Tenga, this dish had two pieces of fish (with bones) cooked with elephant apple and mild spices. The dish had thin gravy and a subtle flavor which went perfectly with the steamed rice. You get Bhoot Jolokia aachar (Ghost chilli pickle) and Kazi nemu (lemon) along with the rice, just add a bit while you are having these curries, it will taste heavenly! The dessert is also provided complimentary which is a nice mildly sweet kheer called Payokh (payesh in Bengali). Did I tell you they serve food and water in traditional Kansa (bronze) utensils? That was super impressive. The pocket pinch for this meal (for two) was only INR 390/-, it was worth every penny! I have also tried their Chicken with bambooshoots, Duck curry, Mutton curry and Rohu Fish Mash. Definitely out of these, fish mash and mutton curry will be tried again, amazing to taste and goes perfectly with steamed rice! Btw just order their unlimited veg thali for INR 70 and order these non-veg sides along with it. Definitely Jaluk is my best restaurant discovery of this year 🙂

I eat from here atleast twice every month and never has their tasted differed. It is always the same. I love their dry pork, veg thali and black rice kheer. Every dish is authentic and keep an eye out for their specials because they source their raw materials from Assam. Do not miss out on the rui fish mashed,it is the best dish on their menu.
