Meher Caterers is a small food joint run by Mr Dara and his wife Mrs Meher Hansotia in the Parsi Dharmashala is Bowbazar. If you yearn for top quality home made 100% authentic Parsi food then this is the place to come. We ordered Chicken pattice, Mutton Dhansak which is a Sunday lunch speciality and Lagan Custard. The chicken pattice was unlike anything we had before. There was a sweet chicken filling wrapped inside a pirate layer. It was amazing. The mutton dhansak came with huge portions of Brown rice and mutton curry cooked in dal. We were told that the spices used were all bought from Mumbai. Stunning to say the least. The mutton was extremely tender and juicy and the dal was cooked to perfection. But the best part was the lagan Custard. It just blew us away. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Meher Caterers. Calcutta foodies must come and explore the various Parsi culinary delights that this place has to offer. Not to forget the amazing hospitality of the Hansotia couple which made our lunch even more memorable. Will definitely visit again.

On my birthday, I looked through Google, searching for parsi cuisine in Kolkata which would be pocket friendly as I had to treat my family of 6. I happened to come across this. I called them up at about 9:00 am and pre-ordered the items that I wished to try and also as suggested by them. I didn’t pay beforehand and decided to collect the food from their place at around 6:30-7 in the evening. It was extremely polite and warm of them to call me up and inform that the food was ready and they also sms’ed me the bill. Anyway coming to the food, it was truly delicious. I would say that the community is meagre and we should try to keep their spirits high by trying out their dishes and diverting momentarily from biriyanis and kebabs! I tried out mutton dhansak which is served with caramelized brown rice(it’s a meal in itself as the mutton is cooked in a dal gravy). There was also Salli chicken that is to be eaten with chapati and it was amazing and tickles the taste buds! And we finally ended with laganu custard which is filled with roasted cashews and one should never miss eating this. The food has a taste- taste of a home cooked meal.Amazingly, all of these items came within a pinch of 2125rs with a quantity that could easily feed 8 medium appetited people atleast. Located in the premises of MANACKJEE RUSTOMJEE DHARAMSALA just beside CMDA building in bowbazar, it is a true paradise, both in terms of food and hospitality. I would recommend this especially to them who wants home cooked food but tasty and different ones in Kolkata.
Navroze Mubarak to All. Having lunch at a place which has a history of more than 100 years was amazing. I am amongst all those who believe the hospitality of the host does matter the most when you go somewhere to eat. Meher Aunty and Dara Uncle was the best host ever. Shared many details about Parsi culture and explained all the Parsi dishes we ordered. We started with Magic Balls – it’s a mixture of shredded chicken and cheese, you can never miss it, but not exactly a Parsi dish. But below are only the authentic Parsi dishes. Parsi Fried Stew – we never knew stew can be fried as well, it’s a veg dish but too good. Then came Prawn Patio – it’s a gravy item and should be had with bread or roti. Coming to the Main Course. Meher Special Pulav Dal – Pulav which would have a Boiled Egg, plenty Chicken chunks and Meat balls. This Pulav comes with Dhansak Dal and Salad. You just need to mix the Pulav with the Dal and take some Chicken or a portion of Meat ball and put it in your mouth, it’s very filling and tasty. At this place you should never say u r tummy full before u try their Lagan Nu Custard – it’s the best custard I have ever had, u just should not miss this. As it’s the Parsi New Year, they came up with some Fried Sawai and that’s considered as their Shagun for any auspicious day. Prior booking should be given, they also take booking for 2 people. But there are some other dishes which they can only prepare if there is group of more than 6. U will feel the happy vibe the moment they pick up ur call to take the booking. Please understand it’s not a regular restaurant, and they trust on telephonic bookings (without any advance). So, please be sure and then only book or else the food is wasted. After knowing about the Parsi delicacies, if u just cannot wait for the heavy downpour to be over, please walk towards Bow Bazar Police Station, u need to take right from Kali Mandir while walking from the Central Metro Station. Once u walk past the police station, after 2 mins u will get the Kolkata Municipality Waste Management Room on ur right. Just adjacent to that there is a right lane, take that, and u would have a yellow building on ur left, that’s it. This route would not be having any waterlogging. Or else u can come from BB Ganguli Street and enter the Bow Street. Lastly to know more about this place, this is a Parsi Dharmshala, named Manackjee Rustomjee Dharmshala (Ola/Uber takes this name). However, Meher Aunty and Dara Uncle takes care of is place and the name of their Catering service is Meher Caterers (not Uber/Ola friendly). For Facebook Check In, search Manak Jee separately. They have very less tourists nowadays, support them by trying their dishes and u wouldn’t be disappointed. Cheers, Meher Aunty and Dara Uncle. We will keep visiting.
190419Considering how much the Parsees were prominent once in Kolkata for trade and commerce, it is a pity that their way of life is now on the ebb. There is really only one place now to get authentic Parsee food in Kolkata – bless themHad a wonderful exposure to Meher’s Catering with my monthly lunch club members, meaning some serious eating took place. We had – Chicken Cutlets with breadMori dal, rice and fish patiya – to be had together, mixedVegetable stew Salli ChickenLagan CustardThe chicken cutlets and the lagan custard were extraordinarily good. The veg dish was piquant with a special Parsi vinegar which imparted a very distinct flavour.Pomfret is not always available, so the fish dish was made with surmai or king mackerel, and was a trifle over-spiced, though I must concede that sea fish in India is usually cooked with heavy spices so perhaps I am nit-picking.We had to order in advance and the food had a home-cooked feel to it, not mass produced or tossed off in a hurry. Apparently the lagan custard needs 24 hours to be prepared – wow.The venue has an old world Parsee charm, which was worth the trip to a rather congested area in central Kolkata. We came away impressed.Hope the joys of Parsee food reach more people. Hope we have a chain some day with the authenticty intact.
I’m a newbie to Parsi food. We had ordered mutton dhansak, Keema kabab and custard. It was superb!! It has got unique taste and falls under rare combination of being both healthy and tasty. Loved it! Would love to come often! Note: you have to preorder ( we didn’t give any advance ) one day earlier.Do visit!!
The old world charm of food being delivered in a aluminium dabba brightened our Sunday afternoon. It was a birthday spread of mutton pulav, salli chicken, patrani machhli, stew and custard. I’d called Meher the day before to put in the order and discovered that she was in fact on leave. But Meher Aunty still made sure that the dabba made its way to us.The generous portions were warm when they reached us at Hazra. The mutton pulav came with dhansak dal, kumchember salad and potato fries. The patrani machhli (we opted for surmai) was moist and aromatic. The salli chicken was soft and yet it wasn’t falling right off the bones. The custard, complete with the little burnt bits at the side, was perfect. This is the kind of food that creates a fuzzy, warm glow around the house. This is the kind of food that makes you feel at home.
