Went here for a lunch on a weekday. We had two options on thali one was smaller one and the later was bigger one. The bigger thali had more options and costed ₹1099/- +tax. The ambience was really good but the service was really slow.In Starters – Radhuni murgh is worth mentioning, but fish bethurani was my favourite among them.Main Course – Kosha Mangsho, Pabda Sorse, Katla Kalia all of them were really good, paired with Polao were really good. All of the items were unlimited. We also ordered Daab Chingri from a la carte menu was below average. Was too sweet.Desert – Pineapple chutney and papad were served. Ordered Nolen Gurer Cheesecake from a la carte was average. It was more of a whipped cream on top of jaggery.
Bengali zamindar Bari themed restaurant, serving authentic east and west Bengali dishes.Ambience is straight out of a Rituparno Ghosh’s film, complete with chandeliers and paintings. All staff members are clad in traditional Bengali attire. Decor and music are full on retro Bengali.Coming to the food, we ordered Potoler chingri stuffed dolma, sona mung dal, desi murgir jhol, mete chorchori and gobindo bhog rice (there was no other option in rice). All the items were served in brass utensils, and tasted delicious and authentic. Quality and quantity both were excellent. Service was quite good too.One gripe was the excessive waiting time to get a table. We went on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait over forty minutes for lunch. The payesh and mishti doi they served for birthday somewhat made up for it though!
Had dinner with my friend . Thank you so much for taking such wonderful care of us. The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. The food was fresh, properly prepared and a great value for the price. We specially enjoyed the special starters. And main course was absolutely awesome. Please give our thanks to the manager and others for wonderful service. Highly recommended.
Ambience is so nice, the decor is based on some zamindar Bari interiors. Mochar pulao and palong chanar kofta, both were delicious. The cocktails were nicely made as well.
Ambience – 4.75/5Staff Behaviour – 4.75/5Service – 4/5Food and drinks – 3.5/5Value for money – 3.75/5Overall – 4.25/5Situated at the 4th floor of City Centre mall, Sonar Tori is a well known restaurant serving authentic bengali food. The restaurant is one of the most beautifully decorated restaurant I have seen. It paints the picture of the luxurious lifestyle of the zamindars from a bygone era. They serve all the food in a ‘kasar’ thala with plantain leaf on top. The waiters are dressed traditionally and overall it really takes you to a different place from a different time when you enter the establishment. The staff are extremely well behaved and courteous. Not only they look dapper in their service clothing, but they bring the authentic ‘bangaliana’ in their service as well. Where they keep offering you more food in a thali setting – which the other establishments would avoid to cut costs. The service is a bit confused at times, but that can be attributed to the fact that we went in a large group. There was some confusion and delay with food, but nothing substantial. The only low point of the whole experience, if I might call so is the food. Having dined in 6 Ballygunj place just the day before, I could compare one bengali establishment with the other quite effectively. And I am sorry to say, 6 Ballygunj place beats Sonar Tori on food hands down. All the items are decent, but if you are charging 1300+tax for a meal you need to serve food that people remember. It was not the case.It would be the bengali place to visit if it improves the food a few notches. I will definitely visit it again to see if the food has improved.
Pros1. The ambience is the main draw. It looks like a refurbished ‘zamindar-bari’, with upholstery of green and golden, and remarkable chandeliers.2. The staff is quite prudent, and they mostly keep young staff in busy hours-which I don’t know whether to consider good or bad.3. Mochar polao, chanar dalna were both very good. Among cocktails- sidecar and toddy were good, the latter came in pretty handy in the winter season.ConsThey add service charge without informing customers about their right to have it waived- which is needed,as per the law. Therefore, I cannot rate them any higher than this.
Satisfying food and beautifully presented in a traditional feel of brass tableware and serve ware. The preparations I loved the most were- aloo dum- Khatta bhindi- daap sandesh- Malai koftaKudos to the chef!
