Pongal in Bengal at Sankalp KolkataPongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, marks a lot of new beginnings. Houses get cleaned, new resolutions are made and there is a lot of festivity and lot of food all around. It is a four-day harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Though it’s ideally a farmer’s festival, the entire state irrespective of their livelihood method, celebrate it. The first day of Pongal, called Bhogi, is celebrated with burning off old stuff. The second day is the main festival. Thai pongal. It’s the day we thank Lord Sun for his blessings and the harvest. Sweet pongal is made of the newly harvested rice and offered to the god. Colourful rangolis adorn the doorsteps that day and the whole day has a brilliant festive feel to it. To welcome the true essence of Pongal in Kolkata, Sankalp Restaurant brings to you an amazing feast.Where and when? Sankalp is a south Indian restaurant which has a universal franchise. First let’s talk about the location. It’s situated in sector V,in the Godrej waterside building. It is at a walking distance from College more stoppage. As you enter the gates of the building, you would be able to see this restaurant right in front of you. This restaurant is a pure veg restaurant, serving their customers since 1980. They have around 150 outlets. They also hold the Guinness book record for making the longest Dosa which was 30ft. This outlet attracts both family and office crowd.I was here to attend tjeir Pongal thali festival which will take place during Pongal this month. The cost of this thali is Rs.299. In this you get Appalam papad, Rasam, pickle, Banana, Bisi Belle hui Hanna, curd rice, steamed rice with sambar, Malgapudi powder, veg korma and puri. And all of these are unlimited. What else could you ask for?Coming to the taste of the food, everything was super fine. The pooris were puffed to perfection with crispy top and munchy bottom. The sambar rice was rice mixed with sambar. The curry leaves and whole grain mustard in it just added in a beautiful aroma. The Rasam, Bissi Bella hui Hanna, veg korma, the three had all delectable tastes. But I loved the veg korma most which made a great pair with the pooris. All three had that blend of spices that took them to the edge of sumptuousness.Curd rice as always is a good company to anything savour, and so was here. Malgapudi powder is something I tasted new and it adds to the taste of the other dishes.Anothet attraction of this restaurant is the Biggest Dosa challenge. They serve the miniature version here which is of 4ft. Four people can participate at a time who have to complete eating the dosa in 90 seconds. Winners will get another dosa for free while losers will have to pay 33.3% of the bill.Me being never able to win food competitionsdidn’t dare to take a part. But I got the chance to taste one. They serve it with five different chutneysand ptato stuffing in separate bowls. The dosa was so perfect that it made the satisfying crisp sound when broken into pieces. I could smell the rawa in it. The chutneys tickled the taste buds well. I could tell they’ve really worked on them.Overall this place is worth a visit to anybody who loves South India cuisine. The waiters serving food in dhoti and kurta shirt would simply take you to the ambience of South India. Plus the food there is great. No matter how puny a dish mighy be, it is taken good care of. Also participate in the the Biggest Dosa challenge and see if you can win the crown!
