We went here for a quick supper. It was only 9pm & there was not a single soul at the canteen. There was no menu card either at any of the tables. We had to run around a bit & get hold of a server. They had Fish thali, Chicken thali & Pork thali. We ordered the Pork thali. Thali came in no time. It had a bowl full of rice, some dal, boiled veggies, some raw veg salad, spicy chutney and the Pork. It was really tasty, especially the Pork. Soft, tender pieces of Pork floating in oil with some red chillies and bamboo shoot or so it seemed. Real tasty meal @ 160/- and the thali was big enough for the two of us. However, there was no water at the table; we had to go out, ask for a glass and drink water after starting their Aquaguard. So, if you don’t mind poor service, you will definitely enjoy the meal.
The ordeal is pretty simple. You order what they have the menu on that day. There is no northeastern joint in the city and apart from El’s Kitchen this place is your only respite. They cook one pork dish, one authentic dish which will be either bamboo shoot or with any local Naga spice. It is worth it.
I have always been looking for authentic Naga food in my city, but sadly in Kolkata, there aren’t many joints serving Naga cuisine. So I decided to drop in at Nagaland House (Saltlake) with two very accomplished blogger friends of mine to try out the Naga lunch thali, at Nagaland House canteen. Basically, we decided to explore the Saltlake area (Kolkata) and find out good no-frill places to savor pork delicacies which many might be unaware of. And Nagaland House came first in my mind because they serve a wholesome Pork Thali and I have known this fact for years now! This Naga Pork Thali is priced at 160 bucks and believe me, they serve a huge quantity of rice which is more than enough for one person. In this thali, you get steamed rice, dal, steamed cabbage (without any seasoning), akhuni chutney paste with some beans and loads of red chili in there, and of course the pork curry. The pork curry was spicy, pretty dry with almost five pieces of diced pork in there. The pieces were a tad too fatty but nonetheless quite flavorful. But frankly speaking, I would have loved more curry in there to have my rice with, since the dal was not that great nor the bland boiled cabbages. So basically you are left with the pork curry, red akhuni chutney and the rice. The Pork curry for which I had come here left me wanting for more for its spicy aftertaste, flavor of fermented bamboo shoots, pepper and loads of other spices! I am surely coming back to this place to try out more items from their short and simple menu, which has chicken and fish thali as well, but anyway this time we were only looking for Pork dishes!
Take smoke pork thali, very simple food ( see my pic) , I misses the king chilli taste though, clean and fast service, don’t expect more, enjoy simplicity,
