Aug 2017:International Dining At Home @ The Olive & Co. ☺Most of the home chefs in Kolkata are either into providing regional Indian cuisines or confectionary items. Though some of them are quite good in their services, the city still suffers a serious dearth of home chefs or home food service providers, who can procure a wide variety of authentic Continental dishes. Even when you come across the ultra scant spread of such providers, in all probability, you are prone to find their wares over priced. Also, there is this perennial hassle of them not delivering the food hamper at your door step, rather you picking it up from their residence! A very small number of the aforementioned folks justify their high price with quality food and well branded packaging. Finally there is a food service that provides authentic Continental and other cuisines, is relatively economically priced and delivers the food hamper at your door step! This food service is called The Olive & Co. – My intro to this food service – Few months back home chef Anushree Jain Goenka contacted me to blog about her two years old food service, The Olive & Co.- The delay in it’s review process – Mostly because of my full schedule and partly because of my unsurity about home chef’s wares, I took my own sweet time in giving the go signal for tasting and review of her products. One needs to understand that, I come across a lot of people who rustle up a pasta, some noodles and brownie and call themselves home chefs! Also, I come across a lot of home chefs who want to send me a solitary cake or something equivalent and expect me to spend 3-4 days in composing, publishing and promoting it’s review! Hence, I am required to carefully choose my tasting sessions, as they involve a lot of (wo)man-hours and honest hard work centered towards promoting the deserving candidates and creating the bridge between available good food and willing diners. – Motivating factors behind agreeing for the tasting session – During the time period between Anushree’s first contact and the tasting session, I studied her festival specific and usual menus that she sent me from time to time, which seemed quite varied and updated. They were multi cuisine by nature and encompassed both authentic and fusion recipes. Also, the pricings were relatively economical. – Planning of the tasting session -For my tasting session, I was given a lot of options to choose from. Purposefully staying away from the usual pastas, wraps, fudges, dessert cups etc., I opted for a Continental meal of 5 items – 1 salad, 2 starters, 1 main course and 1 dessert, comprising of authentic, as well as, trendy and fusion dishes.- The tasting session and review – My food hamper from The Olive & Co. comprised of -1) Moroccan Couscous Salad (Rs. 150/-): It was a lovely concoction of cooked couscous, colored bell pepper chunks, boiled beetroot chunks, sliced olive roundels, pomegranate seeds, lettuces and finely chopped coriander leaves. It came accompanied with a small bowl of olive oil, vinegar and red chilli flakes based Salad Dressing. As per instruction, I mixed them both before tasting. The resultant salad was light to the stomach, colorful to the eyes and tasty to the palette. 2) Cheesy Cigar Rolls (Rs. 300/-): It comprised of six Cigar Rolls made of thin crepes and filled with a cheesy concoction. They came accompanied with a bowl of mayonnaise and hung curd based Curry Patta Dip. The Cigars were quite neatly made and tasted good. The Curry Patta Dip was quite filling and tasty. It paired well with the Cigars. 3) Rice Patty Bake (Rs. 150/-): It comprised of six steamed rice based and cooked on tava or griddle patties, placed in a semi dry preparation of red sauce, topped with enough grated cheese, and finally garnished with a sprig of leaves at the centre. It was a tad bit too spicy for my taste, but that’s only an individual’s preference. Others may like it. 4) Zucchini Lasagna (Rs. 200/-): It was an innovative Lasagna wherein thinly sliced green and yellow peeled zucchinis were used instead of the usual flour based Lasagna sheets. It came along with a big bowl of Red Sauce. As per the instructions, first I warmed the Lasagna in the microwave, then added the accompanying Red Sauce to it, and finally plated it for consumption. With no presence of flour, limited presence of cheese and abundant presence of finely chopped veggies like carrot, beans, onion, coriander leaves and the likes, it was a healthy version of the usual Lasagna. The Red Sauce was well made and added the required zing to the dish. The dish tasted different and good. 5) Fruit Alaska (Rs. 250/-): In spite of being eggless, this fruity version of the popular dessert, Baked Alaska was the the hero of the entire food hamper!Browned meringue surface effect was cleverly achieved by sprinkling cocoa powder over a cream concoction, which was further garnished with a handful of canned cherries placed around a corner of the surface, for eye appeasement. The entire layering of fruits, ice cream, whipped cream etc. was well balanced and tasted excellent. All the aforesaid 5 food items came neatly packed in disposable transparent lidded rectangular plastic containers. All the dips came packed in circular white lidded plastic containers. The total quantity of food was good enough for 3-4 people, depending upon individual appetite and serving of beverages, if any. All in all, it was a good tasting session of usual and innovative Continental dishes, made with good quality ingredients, enjoyed within the cosy and relaxed confines of personal home space. – Pricing – Please note that, the sum total price of the afore mentioned individual items is Rs. 1,050. But the parcel of the entire platter would cost you Rs. 1,500. The additional Rs. 450/- is for packaging and delivery. The Olive & Co. uses Uber service for each of it’s delivery. #vfr170
