Really nice pub with great food a small menu but makes up for it with great quality food for a reasonable price nice atmosphere and decor a must try in my opinion

  • Such Food.

Palmerstown House stands proud, looming over a street of takeaways and rain. The wooden fascia on the walls is cracked, giving a far more authentic ‘old pub’ look than the myriad hipster venues scattered across our grim little planet in the year of our Lord 2014, but that’s probably because it has stood almost since records began. Inside, the cavernous space reveals many layers, giving the whole place a converted-barn feel. There’s a raised dining area, an outward reaching bar and lots and lots of room for activities.Though my eye was drawn to the half chicken, I plumped for a lasagne, standard pub fare.Upon arrival the plate was scorching, an instant sign of a microwave meal. This possibly wasn’t the case, perhaps it had just been kept warm whilst m’esteemed dining colleagues chicken was prepared, but a warm plate always makes me suspicious.I tucked in, delighted that the chef had actually had the common sense to just dollop the lasagne on the plate – so many places put it in those miniature casserole dish type things which just makes the damned thing inaccessible to the discerning diner – two thumbs up for practicality!I must say how remarkably unmemorable this dish was – perhaps I was distracted by the gorgeous surroundings but I genuinely have no recollection of the finer points of the meal. Perhaps there were none. I suppose we’ll never know.Definitely pop in for a pint if you’re in the area – it’s a lovely pub and twould be great for a couple of drinks in the sun in June if Ireland gets any sun. Just don’t overthink it. It’s a pub, and stays true to that title.
