Went for brunch.Had booked a table for 1pm but thanks to decent public transport we arrived early. That was no issue as it wasn’t that busy. I’m surprised it wasn’t much busier!! We picked a table in one of their snugs. Lovely and private. I ordered mimosas – they’re really good.Food wise I ordered the classic chicken goujon bap. Didn’t realise they came with homemade crisps (potato chips!) and I ordered a portion of sweet potato wedges.Wasn’t going to order anything else but ended up ordering a coffee and the have it your way waffles with strawberries, chocolate sauce & ice-cream. This place really ought to be busier. Well worth coming out of the city centre for! I can’t give less than a five. The food was delicious & is v good value for money!! The staff are laid back, good tunes in the background. There’s quite a cool vibe about the place.I want to come back to try their evening menu. The black pudding and apple pizza that I noticed on their menu outside intrigues me 🙂
Let me be the first to say that I’m a serial bruncher. It’s everything I love in a meal. Coffee, alcohol, toast, eggs and frivolous garnishes. Anything that qualifies eggs benedict and a cheeky wine at 1 pm and I’m your gal.But I’ll also be quick to admit that I know not everyone shares my irrational love for this midi-meal – something that became that bit clearer to me during a particularly sobering brunch last week (get it?!)Sober Lane is a Corkonian concept that rose to semi-international fame when it announced it would only accept applications for their Dublin branch via SnapChat. This extremely social watering hole has taken up residence in Irishtown, uniquely situated both near the beach and not far from town either. It’s both a traditional lounge and a hipster inner-city bar in one. During happy hour, win a game of Rock Paper Scissors and the barman won’t charge you for your pint. Yes, it’s many things all at once.Last week Sober Lane announced they would be trialling their new Brunch menu so naturally I had to weasel my way in. Now, Boyfriend being a bartender, was not in love with the idea of a fancy meal first thing in the morning (our 2pm is his 7am) but much to his delight there wasn’t a scrap of hollandaise sauce or pulled pork in site.Brunch in Dublin is a game of egos. Each menu more elaborate than the last, but Sober Lane have paired it back to basics. It’s breakfast, at lunch time. Himself and a bacon and egg sandwich. He remarked on the crispiness of the bacon, washed it down with tea in which he dunked a chocolate Pop Tart. I had beans on toast – regular, baked beans on white sliced pan. Aside from the Pop Tarts, they’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. You can get breakfast rolls for god’s sakes. A breakfast roll and a pint. You try to go into Spar the morning after for a bit of hair of the dog and some soakage and you’ve only got to slink back home, head heavy in shame. But in Sober Lane, it’s no fuss – all fun. It’s a really sweet place and when it’s 1 o’clock in the afternoon and you just want some Cocopops and a breakfast Calzone (yes, you heard right) – take a stroll down this particular lane and you won’t be disappointed.
I ate with a large group of friends for a friends birthday and we were given a special set menu which was good value and tasty- a rocket goats cheese salad to start, choice of steak or chicken for mains with fries and then a delicious creamy chocolate mousse which was actually the highlight. It was 25 euro for all courses and my steak was very tasty, I think some of my friends in the group were less fortunate with the cut of meat they got but mine was very nice! Good buzz and can accommodate big groups!
Really great pub with a good selection of beer, friendly staff and great atmosphere. Unfortunately I had already eaten before going here but the brunch menu looks really promising so watch this space.
