Penguin

About

Penguin Nahariya-coffee house and restaurant, founded in 1940by the Oppenhiemer family who emigrated from Germany in the 1930's. Today the restaurant is managed by the third and the fourth generation of the family, something that is very unusual in the Israeli restaurant industry. During the British mandate penguin was the cultural center for nahariya residents. In the 1940's and 50's the restaurant was a second home for all the "old timers" as well as for new immigrants. During the war of Independence while nahariya was cut off from the rest of the country the one and only newspaper in the city was posted on the restaurants walls. Also the convoy that finally opened the road to a cut off Ichiam left from Penguins door steps. For those who knew penguin "back in the day" It's hard to recognize today's penguin. In the early 90's after a major face lift penguin became today's "penguin square" Penguin is still a central meeting place for Nahariya
