About
Adjacent to the famous Piazza Unit dItalia and Teatro Verdi, in the most prestigious area of the city, Caff Tommaseo owes its name to Tomaso Marcato, who founded it in 1830. He came to Trieste as many people at that time for commercial reasons, and was the first to introduce the purchase of icecream in town. The local was decorated by painter Gatteri and adorned with large mirror brought specifically from Belgium. Known to be one of the premises where irredentism was born, Caff Tommaseo was loved by many greats of the past: Besenghi, Svevo, Joyce, Stuparich, Quarantotti Gambini and Umberto Saba. Since 1954 Caff Tommaseo is protected as a historic and artistic monument and honored of the title locale storico dItalia.Details
