My Italian Professor had taken me there! My! I was surprised to see a vegetarian restaurant in Italy. It did not disappoint us at all. I loved it! I loved it! For a vegetarian like me this restaurant was my oxygen! We had gone for the buffet. The spread was not big but it was tasty! I had tomato basil pasta, couscous, polenta, spinach (or some green vegetable similar to spinach?!) and vegetable rice. For me, the best was the couscous! Never have I eaten a couscous so tasty in Italy. It was perfectly cooked and the vegetables in it were seasoned so well! Reminded me of home! Didn’t enjoy the polenta at all. But then I’m not a polenta person I guess. This is a must visit restaurant if you happen to be in Rome!
Ending Rome visit with a wonderful dinner. The piping hot poppyseed bread with extra virgin olive oil and signature balsamic vinegar was awesome. Spaghetti with black garlic, mushrooms and truffles and grilled eggplant with wafer was very delicious.
Il Margutta is Rome’s first vegetarian restaurant. Opened in the late 70’s they have come quite the long way!I visited them for their weekday lunch buffet. There are loads of clearly marked vegan options (actually the buffet was primarily vegan with a few vegetarian dishes). At 15€ you get to have a very heavy meal. The buffet is not unlimited. You get to fill up one large plate and one soup bowl with however much food you can and that’s your meal. They serve a small dessert at the end and also free water is included (which is a rare thing in Italy!) And there’s no additional “coperto” (the dreaded cover charge).I was so full that I couldn’t have anymore meals that day!The food was tasty (nothing spectacular but delicious nonetheless) and I was happy I got to have lots of vegetables, because the meals I’d had at Italy until then were too grain rich for my taste.Definitely visit Il Margutta when you’re in Rome!
