Ever since it was recommended to me by my trusted foodie friend Roberto, I have been excited to try the Pugliese restaurant Il Trullo, named after the ancient stone huts in the Puglia region of Italy. I must admit that up until now, I have not had the best experiences with Pugliese food, having tried the mediocre Osteria Tipica Pugliese in Milano and a string of bad restaurants while on vacation in Salento. Despite this, I was optimistic about Il Trullo given that everyone seems to think the cuisine from Puglia is one of the best in Italy.I didn’t reserve a table but given the heavy rain that night, the locale was only about half full and I had no problem getting a table for two. The restaurant has a classic family-run osteria style atmosphere, which makes you feel immediately at ease. The menu is somewhat daunting: it is a large three page list of about forty different Pugliese dishes. My girlfriend chose a typical poor man’s soup with beans and warm bread on the side. I on the other hand had no clue what to get so I desperately relied on the advice from foursquare. I went for the dish most often recommended, orecchiette a “nostro modo” aka “done our way”. Another commonly shared opinion was that the portions were quite large. I decided to skip ordering a second dish in part due a nearly tramautic experience at an Abbruzzese restaurant (in the south of Italy, they go big). Before our first courses arrived, we shared an outstanding burrata, probably the best I’ve had in Milano. Then came my girlfriend’s soup, which although was quite simple and reminiscent of other poor soups in Italy, it was very good. As I awaited my pasta dish, the sweet waitress placed what appeared to be a giant salad bowl of grated cacioricotta cheese on the table. I thought it was a communal bowl and that she was about to offer some cheese to go on my girlfiend’s soup. To my surprise she whipped out two large spoons and began to start mixing the concoction. We then realized that this was in fact my pasta dish: an enormous portion of orecchiette with cacioricotta, basil, diced tomatoes, and chili peppers. After an impressive two minute stirring routine, the final product was revealed. It was absolutely delicious due to the fresh ingredients and excellent handmade orecchiette. It also matched well with the excellent house red wine at Il Trullo. Although it took me about 30 minutes to finish the extreme quantity, and I occasionally had flashbacks from the torture I went through at Da Giannino L’angolo D’Abruzzo, I managed to finish the family-sized portion of pasta without too much suffering.

Buon ristorante in zona senza infamia e senza lode.
