Roadside Station Sukumo lies along Route 321 on the national highway, in an important point of traffic for transportation amongst Southwest Shikoku. Amongst Japans innumerable train stations, Sukumo Station is reknown for its large parking lot and beautiful scenery. Built next to neighboring Ehime Prefecture, Sukumo City has become Kochi Prefectures doorway to the West. Facing the Sukumo Port, roadside station Sukumo Sunnyside Park has five stores, and is filled year round with customers. Theres an information center that doubles as administration, as well as shops that sell everything from tea and coral to antiques. There are several delicious treats to choose from as well, such as okonomiyaki, takoyaki, homemade soft serve ice cream, as well as several event areas such as a concert stage, theatre and athletic activities for parents and children. Inside the park there are rental barbeque sets so that visitors can eat outside and enjoy the beautiful view. Reservations are required! Public toilets made from granite and a piece of Sukumo City cultural heritage, a replica of the tomariya (an edo period rest house) make this roadside station the perfect base to begin sightseeing or take a rest. Sunnyside Station is also known for having one of the best views of the daruma sunset, believed to bring luck to whoever sees it, and from November through February the oceanside is lined with camera men waiting to capture its beautiful sunset.
