At RM 58 nett (weekdays) , the tea lounge located within the magnificent Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur is certainly one of the most affordable prestigious places to have high tea/afternoon tea, considering the fact other places are pricing their high tea’s at RM 70+ . Despite the price advantage, the tea lounge does have a few setbacks: firstly its veers away from the traditional British way of having tea, secondly their service although superior, seems slightly disorganized in my opinion, and lastly the only offer 1 tea selection from their menu unless an upgrade is opted (RM 30 for an upgrade). Nevertheless, the tea lounge doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the venue, having not one but three seating choices for patrons; namely the colonial cafe, tea lounge and the orchid conservatory. While their afternoon spread, may lack the ambrosial effect, is definitely, detailed, tasty and delectable. As I had mentioned the venue for high tea has three various dining area to choose from – three difrrent venues, but same service, same price and same food. My personal favorite would be the orchid conservatory- for its unique experience of dining in a room surrounded by beautiful spread of lush colorful orchid. The second being the tea lounge, a beautifully decorated colonial style lounge complete with mahogany furnitures and fine divan. And lastly the colonial cafe, more austere, yet doesn’t lack in the aesthetic beauty of being elegant. The colonial cafe is available on request. While the orchid conservatory and the the tea room is first come first serve. Overall their food choices and taste is good. There is however only one choice of hot tea- which is their house blend Darjeeling tea, that is if I opted for the basic menu at RM 58 nett, however with an upgrade of additional RM 30, I will get a choice of 5 different teas. The food spread remains the same despite an upgrade- the addition is the tea choices. The spread consist of three tiers finger food and dessert. The first tier is laid out with an assortment of premium sandwich (cucumber, smoke salmon, roasted duck), the second layer is scones (two plain and two raisin) with clotted cream and fresh preserve, and the last tier is filled with fresh cakes and pastries. Honestly their cakes is delicious, and not too sweet for the most part, while their sandwich although small is perfect for tea- their scones is slightly dense, yet perfectly tasty. They also offer hot hors d’oeuvre of curry puff, fried shrimp and fried stuffed mantao for tea, served in a separate metal canister. Their service overall fairly good, but at the beginning I felt like my party and a few other tables were left neglected for 10-15 minutes after we were seated. I would recommend the management to address patrons right away after they are seated, maybe presenting a menu, or maybe a warm welcome. After we were seated, none of the servers approached us. Another area of improvement would be the tea cups. They were horrendously large, and doesn’t fit the colonial theme of the atmosphere, it was white, thick and very large, about 16 oz. The tea cups needs to be the fine decorated british tea cups to add to the authenticity of the experience. I also felt that limitation on tea was atrocious- we were only given a limited amount of tea, no refills after that. Never have I had tea and was told that I had a limit of tea to pour – basically for a party of 5 we had 4 pots in between us, which clearly was stingy. The tea should be unlimited. Finally, there should be a smart casual dress code to enter the tea rooms, some people were dressed like peasants- in shorts and cheap knock off t-shirts, its unsightly and drops the image of elegance for this place. Afternoon tea remains to be for the classy, not for people with no pedigree- I think a minimal dress code should be enacted by the management to meet the standards of a 5 star hotel and beyond status. Overall I would be back for the experience as the beauty of this place is unparalleled, however there are some improvements needed to bring this to a higher standard. But overall the tea here is affordable, tasty and most importantly an enjoyable experience. Parking is charged at RM10 and can be validated, and there are plenty of parking in the basement. Valet is charged at RM 30.
My first time at the Tea Lounge and finally understanding what the hype was all about. My friends keep asking me to try the afternoon tea here so here I am. This place has that English feel to it so I really love the ambience here.
