Went here seeing some video blogs about the place. Totally lives up to it. The nyonya Laksa is simply outstanding and the portion size is huge. The coconut rice and the rendang curry is a super combination. The sour plum juice is alright, but I guess it’s an acquired taste. Overall amazing.
Im not going to sugar coat it, this place maybe isn’t finest or tastiest Peranakan or Nonya restaurant in the country, however this place located on the first floor of the central market in KL does a fair job of not only serving some delicious variety Nonya cuisine – Chinese and Malay hybrid cuisine, but also enabling the experience of dining in the classical nonya restaurant atmosphere, complete with antiquities and detailed decorations usually found in Malacca and Penang. Furthermore their service is fast and friendly and their price is extremely affordable.Nonya or Nyonya or Peranakan are descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Indonesia inter-marrying with local Malays. Nonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients with various distinct spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay. It’s the true meaning of fusion food, and truly unique to the culture of Malaysia. Visiting Malaysia and not experiencing Nonya food is like going to Italy and not having their pizza. Some key items to try : Top hat RM 9.80 for a set of 7, Otak otak Rm 6.90 and the bubur cha cha Rm 4.90. These are great to be shared in a group of 2-3 people. The Top hat is edible crunchy shells made with rice flour and deep fried perfectly in a mold to look like top hats – hence the name, its then stuffed with stir-fried julienned jicama and carrots, topped with sliced egg omelet and fresh coriander. Its very important to eat the top hat with the red sauce provided, it’s slightly spicy but mostly very refreshing and bring an oomphh taste to it. The otak otak is a delicious fish paste cooked with sweet basil and other spices- it has a very moist paste texture, with a fragrant flavor and is hardly fishy. I would also try the nasi lemak- a Malaysian favorite for Rm 12.80, it comes with a mild chicken curry, a beautiful blue fragrant coconut rice, some condiments of fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, half a boiled egg and a spicy sambal. The ambience is truly nostalgic to the nonya restaurants in Melacca and Penang. The chic rustic interior is styled to look like a Malaccan shophouse, which the original settlers would work and live out of. My personal favorite is the call button which a modern touch, and creates an efficient and attentive service every-time. There is plenty of parking located at the parking lot of the central market, there is a charge of RM 3 per hour. I would however recommend coming to the city via LRT- stopping at Pasar Seni station, its a hassle free style of traveling to the central market.
