Tucked away is some small corner of KL is this unsuspecting place, up to this time looked like it did in the 60’s. Serving Nasi Kandar, a popular northern Malaysian speciality from the state of Penang. It’s basically a meal of steamed rice which can be plain or mildly flavored, and served with a variety of curries and side dishes. Price ranges from RM 8- RM 20, depending on the side dish added. The meal start at the line, where one cup of cooked rice is added to plate , I usually like my rice portion to be small, so I could have more side dishes, this is entirely up to the individual and could be requested at this stage.Next the choice of side dishes each priced differently. There is about 20-30 side dishes to choose from. Fried chicken, ayam masak merah (chicken in sweet and sour gravy), fish curry, telur masak merah, dagging cincang, shrimp in sambal, curried large prawns, fried squid, fried egg, curry chicken, dagging dendeng, blanched okra, acar timun (cucumber salad) and so much more. Once side dishes is plated, next step is going to the payment counter to order the drink and pay for the food, simple as that. Highly recommend to have sirap bandung without the soda, it is delish. The line can be crazy here, sometime extending all the way out the restaurant, and with a long line comes occupied tables. Best to come early (11am or 11.30 am) and get an early lunch. Parking is hell around these areas, but could’t hurt to try. I would recommend parking at NU Sentral at KL sentral, take the monorail and stop at Medan Tuanku, and walk by foot there.
Be prepared for a queue, which starts even before the main office crowd builds up at noon. Be prepared to fight for an empty seat, which is a challenge if you come as a group. But also be prepared for one of the best nasi kandar that you will have without having to make the journey to Penang. The sirap bandung is also a must have.
