Purple Cane’s niche is cooking with tea, and that was what drew us to this place one Saturday afternoon.Lunch sets were only available weekdays, and we tried the ala carte dishes on the menu.First up was green curry fried chee cheong fun. Spicy, and meatless. Addition of pine nuts was a nice touch.Braised chicken with homemade noodle soup- the chicken was actually rather tasteless and a little bit stringy, although the herbal broth was quite tasty. Noodles were too soft.Panfried noodles with sliced grouper and prawns arrived with crisp noodles swimming in a boatload of gravy. This should have been served in a deeper plate to avoid gravy sloshing over the sides. This was average, and the frozen prawns didn’t help.Fried green tea rice with XO sauce was probably the most flavourful dish although the frozen prawns (again) was a letdown.Rose lotus seed paste was served warm, although there wasn’t much of a distinguishing rose or lotus seed aroma.Overall, average, and we couldn’t really discern any distinct tea flavours in all the dishes we sampled. Also, the area we were seated in was rather stuffy.
