Gotta be honest, they are a little bit pricey for a bowl of soto ayam lamongan, a plate of rice, and a piece of ayam bakar dada. Overall, they were too ordinary and not so delicious. The vibes are not so great and the waiter even forgot that I ordered ayam bakar.

Situated across the ever busy street and sort of across Sunway Pyramid as well, I have passed by this restaurant quite a number of times. On this day, though the intention was to shop at Sunway Pyramid, because we couldn’t contain our hunger, we agreed to dine at Surabaya. A traditional Indonesian ambiance and with a menu that provides enough options, for the two of us, we called for lontong, soto ayam, sotong goreng tepung, nasi goreng, es kacang and es selasih. With no other customers but two or three coming by to pack food, service was quite efficient and came cruising the dishes while we sweated in the slightly gloomy ambiance.  As for dishes, these were quite hearty portions which will go down well in fact for 4 people. Each of the dish came with a separate serving of the spicy vibrant sambal which of course made me happy especially. The lontong with lots going on inside I was expecting for the kuah kacang/kacang sauce to be served separately. But no, it was generously topped over the blanched vegetables and paired with lots of keropok. Taste wise, not too bad but without tipping the sambal inside, flavours were quite subtle. The fried sotong, well, anything fried and eaten immediately is a sheer pleasure, the nasi goreng, again, you need to bold up with the sambal and the soto ayam – mee hoon soaked generously with chicken broth and tender chicken pieces and garnished with fried shallots and coriander leaves. As for the ice kacang and the es selasih pretty much another type of the same, these were super sweet but without stinging on the fruits and jellies. We ate and ate and sure I was glad that my dinner companion didn’t mind finishing off the dishes. All in all, it was a pleasant dining experience over the authentic Indonesian food. For someone like me who have had tucked into cheaper similar Indonesian street food, here at Surabaya it is still affordable especially for the filling portions.
