We had Syake (Salmon sashimi), California Urakami and Buta Kakuni (ramen). While I am always cautious of raw seafood in Malaysia, it is proven to be unfounded at this joint. The salmon was fresh and finely cut. The platter was also well presented so we got on to a good start. The Urakami is also well presented with good flavours with every bite. It is also generous helping for two. Not sure why the avocado is there. It is also too thinly sliced to have added to the buttery texture to counter the rest of the ingredients. A slightly thicker slice would have provided a better balance of this dish. The ramen was a disappointment though. A big one too. Noodle is too soft and limpy, the broth tasted ‘cheap’ and the portion average. The pork however was well cooked. It has that melt in your mouth feel to it; however there is just no ‘kick’ to the type of ramen I have anticipated. Overall, the food is certainly acceptable, above average and potentially deserve a slightly higher rating if not for a fly that I found loitering near our food and the rather inattentive boss who occupies a table in the restaurant and was browsing her tablet and chatting away. As any Japanese dining experience in a restaurant setting, attention to detail and the overall experience is what diners come to expect, it kills the vibes.
Just so after pondering where to dine on this Sunday, driving along the main road across SJ Medical Centre, we agreed to dine at Kin Ryu Tei Japanese Restaurant. Being our first time here, we were quite excited to find out how authentic the food will be. Though the restaurant was only half full, it was quite a wait before we placed our order, that too after continuously calling for service.
