One of the old, classic Veracruz cafes. Just off the zocalo, next to Gran Hotel Diligencias. High ceilings, fans, patrons with guyaberas and straw fedoras. menus offered in english and spanish - get the spanish one - the english one is a little puzzling. they do all the classics well and service is professional and excellent. even their presentation of Sopa de Tortilla is good - bowl of soup with side plate of tiny tortilla strips, chunks of queso fresco, chunks of avocado and slices of guajillo chile - rather than the usual bowl with tortilla strips already in and getting soggy. Ate there mid afternoon and an oasis of quiet and cool in the center of Veracruz.
