About

Mongolia's only fromagerie, a working depot for cheeses arriving from the countryside. Down a quiet lane just 100 meters from the Shangri-La Hotel complex in the center of Ulaanbaatar. Artisan cheeses and other dairy items from MACU (Mongolia's Artisan Cheesemakers Union). Try Khustai Gouda, Mongolia's first artisan cheese, made since 1995 from the milk of nomadic animals by Tumurkhuyag Urtnasan, the doyen of Mongolia's rural cheesemakers. Also, our famous Tsagaankhar (a peppered pecorino from cow milk), Khus Camembert, mozzarella, etc. Fromagerie MACU includes a tiny cafe. Its small menu is popular with cheese aficionados around the world: cheese platters, omelettes, sandwiches, brined cheese salads, pastas, baked camembert, ricotta dumplings sauted with garlic in homemade butter, cheesecake, etc. Opens early, closes late. Fresh bread, morning cinnamon rolls, sparkling black currant kefir smoothies, good coffee, tea, wine and conversation.
